Dear Lily,
I will not be able to play with you in the same way your other aunts and uncles can. You will see me struggle with more things than your other aunts and uncles but that is okay. I may not be able to protect you in the same way an abled person can, but I can teach you other fun ways to play. There will be some events I might miss because I won’t be able to participate in the same way your other aunts can.
What I can do is be your ultimate cheerleader when things get tough and give you unconditional love and support. I’ll go to some events and have fun with you but some I will not as it will be difficult for me to participate because of some of the challenges I face. Go ahead and do stuff without me without feeling guilty about it because there will be plenty of other opportunities. I will always do my best to keep you safe by not putting you in a situation that would put you in harm’s way.
I can give you advice on many subjects such as ableism that your other aunts and uncles will not have knowledge in. School is tough and kids will be mean, but I will always be there if you were to ever need advice on how to handle a bully because I have experience in this area. Hopefully, everyone will be nice to you, and we won’t need to have this discussion but if we do, I got your back. If you are struggling in school and need help with homework, I can help you when you are younger but when you get older, I probably won’t be able to help anymore. You will be in more advanced courses I will not be familiar with, but I can still encourage you. Lucky for you, you have many aunts and very smart parents so there will always be someone to help you.
Sometimes your parents may punish you and it may seem like they are mean and out to get you but they want nothing more than to keep you safe and teach you right from wrong. If they didn’t care they would let you do whatever you wanted even if it was dangerous. You have amazing parents that want the best for you and when they punish you, they do it out of love so you will not keep making the same mistakes. Keeping you safe is their priority and even if you don’t always understand the decisions your parents make just try to understand that they love you. If you do something dangerous your parents will always protect you no matter what the situation is. It sometimes may seem like they are sucking the fun out of everything, but they want nothing more than to know that you are safe.
Lily, I am truly happy to become your aunt and cannot wait to see what kind of adventures we will go on or what the future holds for you. My hope is that you will look up to me and see me as a role model but also as a friend. The decisions your parents make are important to me and I would never go against their wishes, but I will always be there to talk if something is bothering you that you don’t feel comfortable talking to your parents about. If you ever get mad at your mom and dad because they made a decision, you didn’t like just know they had a good reason for it. They don’t enjoy making your unhappy, but they want nothing more than for you to be happy!
Love,
Auntie Sarah
