So many people won’t use the word ‘disabled’ because they think it’s somehow insulting or means we aren’t normal. Well, here are my thoughts on that. Disabled simply means having a condition that restricts your abilities to function physically, mentally, or socially. That’s the definition. A disabled person will not be offended if you call them disabled because you are stating the obvious. Denying the fact you have a disability can actually be very harmful to your mental health and have a huge effect on your self-esteem.
If you tell a disabled child that they aren’t normal and that the only disability in life is a bad attitude then they will never learn how to embrace their disability. It is totally okay to be disabled and teaching your children that is so important because in my experience children tend to take these lessons harder if they have to learn them from a complete stranger.
Do yourself or your child a favor and help them to embrace their disability. It isn’t anything you have to be embarrassed about.
There is nothing to be ashamed of. There is nothing you can do about it and you can’t change it. You have two choices – embrace it or be extremely depressed your whole life. Before you can truly have happiness you have to accept your disability. Yes, things can get rough at times but you have to pull through and not let it get it to your head.
If you’re struggling, find what you’re good at. Everyone is good at something. You can find some sort of hobby such as taking an art class or maybe starting a blog. It may take a little while before you discover what you really like to do, so experiment with different things!
Learning to not be embarrassed about it when people ask you what disability you have is another big step towards embracing your disability. It’s not everyone’s business, so you don’t have to tell anyone anything you don’t want to, but you should also never be ashamed to talk about it if you want to.
If you are struggling with finding ways to build self-confidence here are some ways:
Find a good group of friends – This is critical. If you hang around the wrong group of friends, they will make you feel bad about yourself. So choose your friends wisely!
Get dressed – Make an effort to look nice every day, even if you aren’t going anywhere.
Body Language – People that sit up straight tend to be more confident
Compliment Someone – If you can’t give a compliment you are probably are not a confident person. Not only does it make you feel good about yourself but it also makes someone else feel good. Who doesn’t want that?
Kill those Negative Thoughts – This is one is so true. People that tend to think negatively act negatively. No one wants to be around those people, at least I sure don’t. This one does take practice, so if you find yourself thinking in a negative way you just need to recognize it and try to think positively. Even if nothing is going your way, you need to try to find something positive about it and you will be a much happier person.
