When you have a disability, there may be more things you fear than an abled person. A lot of the time when you have a disability there is more you are unable to do for yourself so you may fear more things. I will share with you some of the things I fear because of my disability.
I’ve fallen and I can’t get up- The idea of this commercial is great acting is terrible! They should seriously consult an expert to help them redo that commercial it would make it so much better! In all seriousness though if you are disabled falling is a regular occurrence. One of the things I fear is falling and not being able to get up and no one being around to help me. I usually take my phone with me everywhere I go, but there are places like in the shower where it would risk water damage. Another fear I have is not being able to get cell service when I need help! Having a cell phone is useless if you can’t get service.
Not being able to move out- If an abled person were not happy with the rules their parents had they could move out when they turned eighteen if they could afford it. That has never been an option for me because I have never found a job so I would not be able to afford to live on my own. Living at home can be very helpful because there is always someone there if I needed help with something. Someday I hope that I will be able to move out like an abled person can but in all honesty, I don’t know if I will be able to because it takes much more work for me to move out.
Unemployment- Being unemployed does not bother me but being placed in the wrong job does. I have been placed in the wrong job before I fear it could happen again. No one could have known it was the wrong type of job for me until I worked it. The anxiety attacks I got from that job were unforgettable and I never want to go through that again.
Unable to defend myself- If I ever needed to defend myself, I could not do it to the extent that an abled person can. An abled person has a lot more options when it comes to self-defense because all their muscles work. If I ever needed to use self-defense I would not have nearly as many options because I am not as fast as an abled person and there are certain muscle groups that just do not work. Somebody who is more physically disabled than I am like Karly would not be able to defend themselves at all. Karly struggles with simple things like getting an itch so she would not be able to defend herself at all. People with a physical disability will most likely have this fear because if they are in a situation where they needed to defend themselves they would not be able to.
Luckily the only fear I have faced was being placed in a job that was not the right fit. I look at it as a learning experience! Facing your fears sometimes is a better approach than avoiding them. Avoiding all your fears sometimes is not a better approach because at some point you may be forced to face them. When the time comes you will have very bad anxiety because you never faced your fears! I know this from experience I have a tendency to avoid all my fears then when I am forced to face them I have severe anxiety attacks. If you have any manageable fears take it head on it may take some time to overcome but you will be glad you did! If you have any questions about how to conquer your fears please leave them in the comments below!
