There are a lot of blogging challenges on WordPress that help bloggers be more consistent with their posts. A popular yearly blogging challenge happens every that some people like to participate in during the month of October is something called Blogtober. What exactly is Blogtober? It is a blogging challenge that is exactly the way it sounds and it’s when bloggers all over the world challenge themselves to write every day for the entire month of October. Some people like to stick to fall themes but it’s not a requirement and the only thing you have to do to be successful at the challenge is to write something of any length all month long. Some bloggers do what I call cheating and update half of their posts but if you want to count me impressed create something new all thirty-one days. Blogtober is great for new bloggers who do not have a established readership that are looking for ways to improve their views but I have never cared for it. I like the idea of Blogtober and may try it in the very distant future but as of right now I think it would be more than I would want to take on. In this post, I am going to talk about why I do not participate in Blogtober or any daily blogging challenges.
It would feel like a chore- Blogging is something that you should do because you like to write and want to make a difference in people’s lives but you should never treat your blog as if it’s something you have to do. I have been successful at publishing on my blog for the last five years because I enjoy seeing the impact it has made on others and I don’t treat like a horrible job I can’t quit. I am not strict with my blogging schedule because when you are strict with your scheduling and blog with no exceptions regardless of how you feel it starts to be more like a horrible job than a fun hobby. Blogging shouldn’t feel like a chore but it can feel like that when you blog at times you aren’t motivated and have no desire to write anything. Bloggers often quit when they lose sight of their blog’s purpose and put extra pressure on themselves that they aren’t ready for to make more money.
It would lead to burnout- Some bloggers can make daily blogging look easy and never run out of things to say but I am not one of those people and honestly do not understand how anyone can find joy in writing every day. Daily blogging is something that I might be able to do successfully for a short time but it would be short-lived and nothing is ever worth it if it makes you want to quit at the end of the challenge. Daily blogging is hard work because you only have twenty-four hours to come up with your next idea when you normally would have days. I sometimes struggle with posting consistently once or twice a week because of pain and if I can’t post consistently once a week I most definitely can’t do it all seven days. Self-care is important for bloggers because without taking care of ourselves we can’t show up for our readers and with daily blogging, there is less time for yourself than there would be if you wrote less. Bloggers burnout is real and there have been times when I was not motivated to blog and had to step back which would not improve if I was forcing myself to write at times I didn’t want to.
I don’t want to compromise quality- Most all of the posts I write are considered high quality in the eyes of Google because they are more than one-thousand words and I always intend to keep in that way. Bloggers who thoroughly research their topics will always get more views than those who whipped something up in twenty minutes. I can create longer posts because I don’t write every day and have more than twenty-four hours to come up with the next idea. Some people can write long-form content every single day but because of pain I will never have the energy to do that every single day but if I was able to do that my posts would be much shorter and less detailed. You should always strive for high-quality content because your followers don’t want to read something that is sloppy and has no point to it. A large number of posts will get more readers but if it’s low quality those new views will be very short-lived and the followers you thought you gained will end up leaving to find someone else that takes pride in well-written posts.
Some people are very successful at completing BlogTober and respect those bloggers who can create high-quality posts on a daily basis because I never would be able to Daily blogging can help some people improve their views, but I would not advise it for people who struggle to post weekly or are still trying to figure the whole blogging thing out because it is more work. Most people that plan on doing Blogtober plan their posts way in advance because you can’t wing it when you are writing every single day. I think I could be successful at Blogtober but I haven’t considered it because I don’t want to take the fun out of blogging. This post was not written to discourage you from daily blogging, and I am only giving my reasons for not writing every single day, but you may have a different point of view. If you think Blogtober is something, you could do successfully I think you should try it because it’s good to step out of our comfort zones sometimes but even if you can’t you are still ahead of those people who have never written a blog post. What do you think of Blogtober and have you considered trying it?
