When you start a blog it can be hard and take so much time out of your day but after a while, it gets easier and you can create a reasonably long blog post in hours. For most people creating content for your blog is not hard because many bloggers love what they do but sometimes life gets in the way and it’s difficult to be consistent with your posting schedule. When you don’t have a lot of extra time to create it can be helpful to write some extra articles to stay on top of your blog for those times when you are busy with other activities and there isn’t a whole of extra time. I have heard many bloggers suggest that you write extra articles so you can always be prepared but is that a realistic goal for people struggling with pain? Writing extra articles is a lot more work and in my experience, the only people that give this suggestion are people who aren’t disabled and do not struggle with pain because it’s not great advice for people with pain conditions. In this post I am going to talk about why writing extra blogs post is difficult for people who struggle with constant chronic pain.
Sometimes your energy is too low to do basic tasks- When you have chronic pain there will be days when your pain is on the higher end and getting up to go to the bathroom is asking a lot but there will also be some days when your pain is not through the roof but your fatigue is at a whole new level. Some people struggle with fatigue because of a diagnosed chronic illness but sometimes it’s your medication that is making you extra tired and there is not a whole lot you can do about that because your medication helps you have less flares. Last week I had a lot of plans for creating content but none of it happened because although I didn’t have more pain than issue my fatigue was at a whole new level. Fatigue with chronic pain is not something you can push through by drinking a lot of coffee because a lot of the time it does not change your fatigue. Now you are telling me that I need to force myself to write blog posts when I am not feeling my best so I have something for those days I do not feel like it. No, and this is not good advice for people with pain because when you have low energy you need to preserve it for important things like taking a shower. Resting is the best things you can do when you are struggling with pain because when you push yourself to do things that you don’t have energy for, it can make your fatigue even worse.
Brain fog is at a whole new level- People who live with pain often experience a lot of brain fog on days when their pain is high. What is brain fog? It is when you are feeling confused, forgetful and are lacking in mental clarity because of pain or sleep deprivation. Anyone can experience brain fog but people with pain tend to experience it more often and when severe pain strikes it is at a whole new level. I don’t recommend that people with pain conditions or who are recovering from a major surgery to write blog posts on days their pain is at its highest because you will not be able to write as good of a post when you are distracted by pain. Most days you may not be able to do anything at all because although you may have an idea it will be difficult to come up with words to say it.
People with pain need to rest more- Most people that live with constant chronic pain need to rest more to prevent pain flares that would leave them bed-bound. When you write extra articles it may give you the ability to post more often but the problem with that theory is that it gives you less time to rest. People with pain naturally need more rest because our bodies are working extra hard to fight pain and now you’re telling me I need to work more to stay on top of my blog. I can see how writing extra articles would be helpful for someone that doesn’t have a disability or chronic illness that gives them a lot of pain but for people with pain it’s not a good idea and it’s better to prioritize self-care than worry about not having a blog post.
Pain is unpredictable– There have been many times when I went to bed early because I wanted to write a post the next day and it didn’t happen because I woke up feeling nauseous and not feeling that great. Most people with pain cannot plan for pain flares because it’s unpredictable and you can be feeling great today but horrible tomorrow. Some people with pain can bearly get things out on days they schedule their content because pain interferes with every aspect of your life and you can’t really plan for bad pain days and they just happen out of the blue. People with pain can have a very difficult time getting ahead of their posts and sometimes you may get behind because your body decides it was a great idea to give you a week of horrible pain.
During the holiday season, it can be hard to blog consistently because there is so much shopping to do and event you need to plan. Writing more to get ahead of your posts is a great idea for most people, especially during the holidays but it is not something that people with pain can realistically do. People that live with mild pain often can write more than those who are bed-bound because of pain but for most people, it’s going to happen. Pain can be distracting and when it’s all you can think about often the quality of your posts will go down if you force yourself to work. Writing extra articles during the holiday season can help you get ahead of posts but to say that everyone should do it with no exceptions is bad advice and can make some people feel guilty for taking the week off when their bodies demand rest. The number of times you post is up to the individual and there is no perfect number because some people will naturally have more energy and be able to post every day while others struggle to get something out once a month. What are your thoughts on writing extra posts while living with pain?
