Video content is more popular than blogging and a lot of creators have created YouTube channels to get more views to their blog because most people would prefer to listen to something rather than read it. I promote my blog on social media and am on several social platforms, but I am not on YouTube and don’t think I ever will be because I would much rather write my thoughts than speak it. A YouTube channel can help some creators get more traffic to their blog because the more platform you are on the more opportunities you have for growth, but it’s a lot of work to do be on both and is not for everyone. Blogging and YouTube is possible, but it can take a lot of your time and if you want to do both a lot of people have to create different types of content on avoid burn-out and running out of ideas. I create and podcasts to make my content more accessible and Instagram reels because I am trying to grow my Instagram account and Instagram prioritizes reels but that is about the extent of my video content, and I have no Interest in being on video platform such as YouTube and Tik-Tok. In this post, I am going to talk about why I don’t have a YouTube channel as a disabled creator.
I don’t enjoy making video content- I create Instagram reels because Instagram prioritizes reels and it’s the only way you will make it on that platform. I started a blog because I do not enjoy being on camera because I am a perfectionist and tend to get very nervous when on camera and don’t present myself as well as I could have in a blog post. I am very much capable of creating video content that gets a lot of views and my last reel got over five-hundred views within the first day of posting it and it’s still growing. I don’t have a YouTube channel because although I will create video content, I do not enjoy it and pressuring myself to be on YouTube when I don’t like on camera would likely lead to burn-out I tend to be a huge procrastinator when it comes to blogging because I can create a longer blog post in a matter of hours, but you couldn’t do that if you had a YouTube channel because it takes longer to edit a video.
I don’t know that much about video editing– It is not rocket science to edit a blog post because all you have to do is find appropriate images, proofread and correct any grammatical errors it may have but editing a video is a little bit of a longer process. I am not ashamed to say that I have no idea how to edit a video because I have never done it and my definition of video editing is re-recording it until I am satisfied. It’s not that I couldn’t learn to edit a video because I taught myself how to set up a blog, but I have no desire to learn. I am always re-reading older blog posts and making tweaks them but with a video you can do that and before I could even consider a YouTube channel, I’d have to be more confident with being on camera and be able to let go of perfectionism. If I were to set up a YouTube channel tomorrow, I would likely never post anything because I would always have in my head that the video can be better.
You don’t want to be on more platforms than you can handle- The biggest mistake I see a lot of content creators and business owners make is that they are trying to be on all the popular social media platforms. Social media can bring in a lot of views to your blog because the more places your share your content the more views it will get but at the same time you don’t want to be on more social media platform than you can handle. Social media can help grow your business but if you are on more than you handle and don’t update half of your social media it can hurt your business. I have gotten a lot of traffic from my social media but sometimes it can feel a little overwhelming because when I started, I think I may have jumped the gun and joined too many social media platforms.
I am die-hard introvert– Blogging and YouTube can both bring in a steady paycheck and can become a full-time career if you work hard at it. Which is better a blog or YouTube channel? A YouTube channel is more popular because you can be doing something else and listening to a video at the same time, but it can be difficult to multi-task if you have to read it. I do not think that there is one thing better than other and it depends on the type of person you are and how hard you are willing to work. I am a die-hard introvert and do not thrive with being on camera and if you know me you would know that I am so far from me extraverted. People that are more introverted generally thrive with blogging while people who are more extraverted and like to talk to their audience generally thrive at video content. I started a blog because I wanted to express myself through my words without forcing myself to be on camera and talking about it. It’s not that I couldn’t create a successful YouTube channel while being an introvert because anyone who practices a skill gets better at it and I just don’t want to.
Most people prefer video content over a blog but even though something is more popular that doesn’t mean that as a creator you have to force yourself to do something you don’t enjoy. Bloggers and YouTubers have to put in a lot of hours to make their channels successful and it will show in your content when you force yourself to do things you don’t like. I have become more confident in my video content the more I do it, but I still don’t think I will ever have a YouTube channel because sometimes people on YouTube are not nice and I don’t want content creation to become a toxic place for me or any of my readers. It’s not to say that bloggers are never mean, and I have come across some very unkind bloggers, but most bloggers are nice because you really have to love to write to thrive at blogging. If was going to create a YouTube channel I would have to reduce my blogging because it takes more time to create a video and I don’t see myself wanting to do that. Do you have a YouTube channel for your blog?
