Power outages can happen very a lot of reasons, and sometimes you are without power for days, which can be boring. Most things that we do on a regular basis to entertain ourselves require power, and when it’s down, it can be a little harder to entertain ourselves. When you don’t have power, sometimes people don’t know what to do with themselves because these days, kids are glued to their phones and don’t know how to entertain themselves when the Internet is spotty. I spend a lot of time online because I have to in order to grow my blog, but when there is a power outage, I can’t do the same things since all my work requires an Internet connection. I do know how to entertain myself without power and have a couple of activities that I don’t do every day but keep for when the power goes out, because having something to do is better than doing nothing at all, even if it’s not your preference. How do you entertain yourself when there is a power outage? In this post, I am going to talk about a few things you can do when your power is down.
Write a blog post– I type blog posts faster than I would write them, but if you don’t have power, the great thing about blogging is that you don’t need a computer to blog. You can write blog posts without one because you can always do it the old-fashioned way with pen and paper. It will probably take three times as long to write one post, but that is okay because it will keep you from getting bored, and it’s not like you have anything better to do. You can technically publish blog posts without the Internet as long as you have cellular data but try not to use the power on my devices when I can’t charge them. Writing blog posts is a great way to entertain yourself when there is no power because it will allow you to get ahead with your content, and all you will have to do when the power comes back on is type them in your computer and maybe create some graphics, which won’t take that long. It will be difficult to write blog posts at night when it’s pitch dark, and you might need to find another activity, but it’s a great activity to do during the day. You don’t need a blog to write, and anyone can do it with or without power.
Meditate– If there is no power, I would not recommend exercise, even if it’s very low intensity, because it could cause you to get overheated, which can be a problem when you have no air conditioning, and the only time it might be okay is if you have access to a pool. If you are stressed and typically use exercise as a way to cope, it might be a good idea to try meditation because it’s not going to get you all sweaty and may help you relax. Meditation has been proven to help people who struggle with anxiety and depression, but I have never been able to get into the traditional way of meditation. There are a lot of ways you can meditate, and you don’t have to sit in the center of your room with your eyes closed because that is not going to be for everyone. Do something that you find relaxing because anything that helps you relax and relieves stress can be a form of meditation. My meditation is lying in bed while listening to my favorite music or podcast.
Play a board game with your family- I am not much into board games such as Scrabble and Monopoly because I am not a fan of games that take hours, but when there is no power and I am desperate to do literally anything, I will play a game with my friends and family until the power comes back on. If you live alone, playing a board game with others might not be an option, but if other people are with you, dusting off those board games might be a good idea. Board games are a great way to spend quality time with your family, and you don’t need power to play a game.
Read a book- I have a couple of books that I have been wanting to read, but have never been able to motivate myself to actually read them because I am not much of a reader. Power outages are a great time to dust off all those books you have been wanting to read but haven’t had the time because you were busy. The great thing about books is you can still read them when it gets dark, provided you have a flashlight.
Get creative- Do you have a craft sitting in your closet that you have been wanting to do but have been too busy and haven’t had the time? Power outages are the perfect time to get those crafts out and get creative because you don’t have social media to distract you and can utilize your creative muscles. There are a lot of crafts that can take weeks to complete, and there is no better time to start these crafts than when there is a power outage. I have a bunch of activities that I don’t do on a regular basis that I keep on hand for when there is a power outage. Don’t throw away crafts you aren’t actively doing because you never know when you will lose power and will want those crafts. Hurricanes never happen by surprise; you always know when one might be coming your way, and if you don’t have crafts, you can always buy them ahead of time.
Do some spring cleaning- I would not recommend you do a deep cleaning of your house, that would make you get all sweaty, but there is nothing wrong with going through your closet and doing some spring cleaning. Go through your closet and make a pile of all the things that can be donated that you don’t use anymore, because that can take quite a few hours and is something we often put off. I dress differently because of pain, and recently I went through my closet and got rid of a bunch of clothes that trigger pain that I no longer wear, to make room for things I am going to wear. It’s never too late to start decluttering your home because you never realize how much junk you have until you start to go through it. You will feel so much better when you declutter and you are more productive when you are organized.
Power outages are frustrating because, depending on the time of year of the outage, sometimes it’s hot, and most things we do to entertain ourselves require the Internet. I would much rather write a blog post on my computer, but if I am in a situation where my Internet is down, and I don’t have access to my computer, I can still write them, and it just may take me a little longer, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. There are a lot of things you can do without power because you don’t need the Internet to color some pictures or do a puzzle. I think that it can be good to sometimes be in a situation where you don’t have access to the Internet because it forces you to live in the moment and connect with others. Nowadays, people rely too much on the Internet and have no idea what to do with themselves without it, which is sad because social media is fake, and it’s important that we occasionally unplug from social media.
