Blogging is a cheaper hobby than being a YouTuber, but even though it’s less expensive than most hobbies, you still need some tools to make blogging possible. Every blogger uses different tools, and not everyone is going to use the same types of equipment because not all bloggers write about the same topics and will use the same things to run their blogs. Creators who have been blogging for longer and want to make money off their blogs often have higher expectations and will require more equipment than someone who started last week and doesn’t have a large following. The equipment that a blogger needs to do their job effectively is going to vary from person to person, and it depends on what your niche is, because people who have photography blogs might need a decent camera that someone who only writes and never takes pictures wouldn’t need to invest in. What tools do I need to run my blog? In this post, I am going to talk about a few tools that I need to be able to run my blog.
A reliable hosting service- Blogging sometimes costs money, but it can be free because investing in your blog is not a requirement. You can’t blog without a hosting service, because everyone uses some kind of website to host their blog on. There are a lot of different hosting services that you can use as a blogger, such as WordPress, Bluehost, and SiteGround, and sometimes you have to shop around to find one you like but everyone needs one. A reliable host is a must-have for every blogger because you need a place to store all your content and can’t publish online without it.
A subscription to Canva– A subscription to Canva is not completely necessary because they do have a free version, but if you are a business, you might want to consider it. In my opinion, the hardest part of blogging isn’t writing blog posts but it’s finding images, because due to copyright laws, you can’t go on Google and download whatever image you want. You don’t necessarily have to pay for Canva because it does cost money, and some people can’t afford it, but it is a great option if you want professional-looking images for your blog without getting in any legal trouble. I don’t use the paid version of Canva because I don’t make a lot of money but I do use the free version and couldn’t create images without it.
A reliable Internet connection- Blog posts can be written without the Internet on Microsoft Word or the old-fashioned way with pen and paper, but you cannot publish a blog post without an Internet connection. You can publish blog posts if you have cellular data, but I have never done it that way because it takes so much longer and when the Internet is spotty, sometimes things don’t save and you have to redo it. You can schedule blog posts ahead of time if you know you will be away and won’t have access to the Internet but you need the Internet to publish online. An Internet connection is a requirement for all bloggers, and we can’t do our jobs without it
Selfie stick for taking photos independently– Some bloggers only write blog posts and do not take any pictures, but for those of us who do take pictures or make video content a self stick can make filming content easier. As a disabled blogger, I mostly stick to writing, but I do create some video content on my social media because social platforms prioritize video content which will help you grow faster. My goal is to make my video content look halfway decent, but I don’t try that hard to make it look professional because video editing is not my strength, and I don’t enjoy it as much. I was gifted a selfie-stick a few years ago and it has made making video content a little less stressful because I don’t have to hold my phone and have a little more freedom in the types of content I can create. Selfie sticks can be helpful for bloggers who take photos because they can help make images look a little better and it isn’t as obvious that you took a picture of yourself.
A professional-looking camera- People often don’t think that a blogger would need a professional-looking camera because it is always assumed that blogging is all about writing. Most bloggers write blog posts and would not need a one-thousand-dollar camera to do their job, but photography bloggers do exist. Some bloggers are not writers, and their entire blogs are photos which means you would need to create fabulous-looking photos and the only way you would be able to do that is with a decent camera because photos from a cellphone are not the same quality. I will never need to invest in a professional camera because I am not a photography blogger but it would be something I would invest in if I did change my mind.
A reliable device- You can write blog posts on a lot of different devices and not every blogger is going to blog on the same device because some people may prefer to blog on a computer over an iPad or vice versa. In my seven years of blogging, I have learned that I prefer to blog on a computer because I can type faster and catch errors a lot easier, but I can blog on other devices, such as an iPad or cellphone if something were to happen to my preferred device. There is nothing more frustrating than when your preferred device stops working and you don’t have a backup because you can’t share your blog posts without a device.
Blogging does not require a lot of tools, which is why people like me who don’t make a lot of money are able to do it, but like any job, sometimes you have to invest in some tools to make it possible. Some bloggers spend a lot of money on their blogs, but that is not a requirement, and I usually only recommend people invest in their blog if they want to make money, because blogging can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be. You don’t have to invest in every blogging tool that people say you need, and it depends on what your blog is about and how serious you are about making money, because people who want to be professional bloggers will need to put more effort into their content than someone who blogs for fun. These are only a few tools a blogger might need, but it is not a complete list because everyone is in different stages of their blogging journey and will use different equipment.
