When you are a blogger, sometimes you will create video content to expand your reach but most people who have blogs don’t want to be on camera. Some bloggers create video content in addition to writing blog posts, but video content is a choice, not a requirement. I started my blog because I didn’t want to be on camera, and if you had told me a few years ago that today I’d be making video content today I would have laughed at you and thought you were crazy. I have always been uncomfortable with talking on camera because I have a speech delay and sometimes stutter and creating video content voluntarily is not something I ever saw myself doing. As we get older, things change, and sometimes we do things that we never thought we would. Video content is something I will do to expand my reach, but it’s not my favorite part of the job. Why would I create video content if I hate being on camera? In this post, I am going to talk about why I started to creating video content even though I don’t enjoy it as much.
It forces me to do something out of my comfort zone- When I was a child, I was very self-conscious about the way I talked, and still am, because I have a speech delay and sometimes struggle to say certain words. I have always been the girl who would avoid cameras at family functions as best as I could because I didn’t want to see myself talking in that video later on. As a blogger, I am always telling people to do things out of their comfort zone because that is how we grow, and great things don’t happen in comfort zones. Why should I expect my readers to push themselves out of their comfort zones if I am not willing to do that myself? I started creating video content to overcome my fear of being on camera because it’s important that as creators, we do things that make us a little uncomfortable to encourage people to do that as well. I was very anxious when I created my first video, and it was not good, nor was my first blog post, but as I created more, I gained confidence, and now it’s not a big deal. My video content does not get as many views as blog posts, and that is okay, but it has forced me to do something slightly out of my comfort zone. As a content creator, I sometimes get paid opportunities, and you never know if that brand will require video content. I never want to be that person who has to turn down great opportunities because I can’t create a two-minute video without freezing. I love that I can now talk on a camera and not be overly anxious because it can be exhausting to constantly have to avoid cameras at family functions.
Some people prefer video content- Video content and podcasts can help your blog grow even further because audio posts are more accessible for some people. Disabled people with visual impairments sometimes struggle with reading blog posts and need to listen to them. As a disabled blogger, I teach people what it means to be accessible, and I think I have failed as a creator if I am not doing everything I can to make my content as accessible as possible. At this time, I do not have audio versions of my posts because right now I am focusing on building my blog, but I do plan on having them in the future because audio versions of posts help your blog reach more people. Social platforms often prioritize video content because most people prefer that, and it can be more difficult to grow without it. I hate that it is encouraged to create reels to grow on social media because not everyone is comfortable creating video content, but it is what it is, and sometimes you have to do things that make you a little uncomfortable because it will reach more people. I make video content to make my blog more accessible because sometimes you don’t have time to read a blog post, or are not able to, and prefer to listen to it in the car on your way to work.
Sometimes I have something quick to say- My long-form content is written in the form of a blog post but if I have something quick to say, a lot of the time, I will create an Instagram reel because I am not going to waste on blog post on something I can say in thirty seconds. There are a lot of important messages that I want to share, but sometimes they are short, and I can say in one or two sentences, and I don’t typically write blog posts under five hundred words.
You can connect with your audience better- I create reels because it is a lot easier to show people your personality and connect with your audience when they can see you. People get to see the person they are following, which builds trust and is a lot harder to do with only words, and sometimes people need to see your face.
Video content is not my favorite type of content to create, but it helps me better connect with my audience, and as I create more videos, I have become more confident with being on camera. Some bloggers are writers and will never create video content, and that is okay because it takes a lot more time to create video content in addition to blog posts, and not everyone has a lot of extra time. When you are a blogger, sometimes it can be difficult to grow your blog because not everyone wants to read blog posts, and video content can help get more views to your blog. Most people prefer video content because you don’t have to stop what you are doing to read a post and can multitask, which is likely the reason why it’s more popular. Video content is not for everyone, but there are a lot of benefits because you will reach more people when you make it accessible to as many people as possible.
