When you read a blogger’s posts, you can only hope that the story they are telling you is true, but you will have no idea if it is unless you happen to be there. It is easy to lie online to get views because most people don’t know you personally and are going to believe everything you. If I wanted to, I could come up with better, more exciting stories that are completely made up, and unless my story was way out there, it is likely I’d get away with it because strangers don’t know what real-life experiences I have had outside of my blog. I have never lied to get views, but some creators do because they get obsessed with their stats, which is why you should believe everything you read online. Some people are not honest and will do whatever it takes to get views, even if that means being a little dishonest. Should you lie to get more views to your blog? I don’t think so, and I think that lies can sometimes backfire and cause you to lose views. In this post, I am going to share why I don’t lie on my blog to make my stories more interesting.
Honesty builds trust with your reads– When it comes to blogging, sometimes people think that they need a super exciting story but don’t have one, so they make one up. A good story will keep your readers entertained, which will keep them on your blog longer and help increase your views, but if your story is not true, people will stop trusting you and will find another blog to read. Blogging is all about building trust with your readers because people love authenticity, and you are doing the opposite of that when you aren’t being honest. It’s not all about having the most exciting story on the Internet because people don’t want to hear about your climb to Mount Everest that never happened and want to read about things that actually did. Honesty is always the best policy because your blog will grow when people can trust you and will lose views when they have no idea what is true and what isn’t. I don’t know about you I’d rather support someone who is creating authentic content than someone who is desperate for views and will do whatever it takes, even if that means telling a couple of white lies. People need to be able to trust the creator they are following, and when you aren’t giving them a reason to trust you.
It’s wrong and your readers deserve more than that- As a disabled Christian blogger, I don’t lie because it goes against everything I stand for, but regardless of your religion, you shouldn’t lie. I will never understand how creators who build dishonest brands and don’t feel bad about misleading their readers, because people deserve better than that. You don’t have to lie to increase your views, and if you think you do, it’s probably not because your stories aren’t interesting enough, but it’s how you are approaching them. It is possible to create an honest blog that is interesting without misleading your readers because you don’t need to have impressive life experiences to get people to follow you. Lying is wrong, and if you feel like you have to be dishonest, you don’t know enough about that specific topic and shouldn’t be writing about it. People who can’t be honest online shouldn’t be gaining followers, and I wish there could be some kind of consequence for that because readers deserve better than that. You will lose your credibility by lying, and that should be most important because a little lie can cause someone great harm.
It is harder to keep up with your lies- When you are honest on your blog, sometimes you may forget what stories you told, depending on how many posts you have, but if you know these stories are true, you never have to worry about slipping up. An honest blog is much easier and less stressful to manage because when you have a habit of not being honest, you have to keep up with your lies so no one figures it out, and the longer you blog the easier it is to slip up. When you have hundreds of posts, it’s easy to forget about everything you have written, and sometimes, we may repeat things, but you can always tell an honest blogger from a dishonest one because dishonest bloggers always have changing stories, whereas an honest creator never has gaps in their stories that seem questionable. It is harder to maintain a blog that is full of lies because you can’t slip up, and the moment you do and contradict one of your stories, people will stop trusting you.
You may attract the wrong kind of audience- As a disabled blogger, I try to be as authentic as I can because I don’t care about having the most followers and care more about building a supportive community. Content that seems fake attracts the wrong kind of audience and I would rather have less, more supportive followers than more whiny followers who only care about views. Dishonesty can attract more trolls, and do you really want that? Don’t strive to get as many followers as possible but instead aim to create authentic content that attracts the right kind of people.
When it comes it blogging, it’s easy to lie and get away with it because people don’t know you personally, and it’s not their place to call you out on something they know nothing about. It may be easy to lie on your blog, but even though you can do something as tempting as it is, that doesn’t mean you should. You should always strive to be an honest blogger because you don’t know what advice people are taking from your content. Don’t lie to get views because it can show in your writing and attract the wrong kind of audience. Lying to get more views is never a good idea because people want to get to know you, and as soon as people find out your blog is a lie, you will lose credibility, and people will unfollow you. It is impossible to know who is being honest online and who isn’t without knowing them personally, because some people are good liars, but if you have bad feelings about someone, it’s okay to stop supporting them. Do you think that it is okay for bloggers to lie if it helps them get more views? If you liked this post, please leave a comment below and share it with your friends.
