When you start a blog, most people want to see it grow because there is nothing more frustrating than putting in so much work and not gaining new followers. Blogging is a lot of work because, despite what some people believe, it’s more than just writing, and you can’t just write a few posts and become an overnight success. There is so much more to blogging than writing blog posts, and sometimes, new creators are misinformed of what blogging actually entails and make mistakes that can make it more difficult to grow. As a disabled blogger who has been online for seven years, I have made a lot of mistakes through my years of blogging, like everyone has, that have caused some setbacks. Everyone blogs for different reasons because not everyone wants to make money like I do, and some people do it as a hobby, but if you are serious a blogging it’s so important to learn as much as you can about it so you don’t make a rookie mistake that could cause you lose followers. In this post, I am sharing a few common mistakes that I see new creators make that I made myself, so you don’t have to make these same mistakes.
Posting too often – I am a strong believer that we shouldn’t be telling bloggers how often they should be posting because it’s your blog, and you should be allowed to post as often as you would like. As much as I don’t think that we should be telling bloggers how to run their blogs, I do think that there is such a thing as posting too often. Blogs thrive on content, and the more you post, the faster you will grow, but you don’t want to annoy your readers by posting too often. When you are a new blogger, a lot of the time you have tons of ideas and people get excited and want to share all of them in a very short period of time. Spread your posts out because you may have tons of ideas now, but one hundred posts from now, you may not have as many ideas. If you are making posts five times a day, sometimes people get annoyed by that and stop following you because it can seem spammy. I write mostly every day, but I don’t share posts every single time I write one, and most times, I schedule them for another day because you can still blog multiple times a day but don’t have to share them at the time they are written. Find a schedule that works for you and doesn’t annoy your readers because posting too often can backfire.
Not posting enough- Some creator post too often and annoy their readers while others abandon their blogs and don’t post enough. Blogs thrive on content, and as much as you want to make sure you aren’t annoying your readers with too much content, you also want to make sure you are posting enough. I see a lot of new creators be very consistent in the beginning but after about two months or so, they burn out from it and stop posting. Your blog is never going to grow if you don’t post enough because you can’t expect people to keep coming back if you don’t regularly create new content for people to read. Everyone has different blogging schedules, and there is no magic number of how often you should be posting, but it is important to be consistent and post enough because that is one of the biggest mistakes people make. I personally have found that posting two to three times a week can get you steady growth but even once a month can get you steady growth.
Trying to be on too many social platforms- When I started blogging, I tried to get on as many social media platforms because it gets your content in front of more eyes, which will give you more views. Social media is not a requirement for bloggers because it can help increase your reach. but you don’t have to get on every social platform because, just like your blog, you have to regularly update your social media. It is important to not take on more than you can handle because what will happen is half of them will get neglected. I use Facebook, X, Instagram and Pinterest to grow my blog, but I don’t have Bluesky or TikTok because that is too many platforms for me to manage. You don’t have to be on every social media platform and can start with one, and once you are able to be consistent with that, then you can add more. Social media can help you increase your reach but only if you are actually updating it on a regular basis because more is not always better.
Not responding to comments- I do not always respond to comments right away, but I do try to give some kind of response to every single person who comments because your readers deserve that. Sometimes, people don’t say much, and there is not much I can say, so I only like the comment, but I always want people to know that I read it because if someone took the time to comment, you should at least acknowledge it. Blogging is all about building connections with your readers, and one of the biggest mistakes people make is ignoring comments. It is relatively easy for me to respond to every comment because I don’t get hundreds a day like some creators do, but you should try to respond to every comment. Building a blog is not only about getting as many followers as possible and engagement is also super important because the more people who engage, the higher you will rank in search engines.
Not prioritizing quality content- When I was a new creator, I tried to get as many posts up as possible and didn’t really prioritize quality content because I thought more was better. People who have a lot of content on their blogs often get more views than someone who doesn’t have much, but it’s not just about the number of posts, and quality is better than quantity. People don’t want to read sloppy, poorly written posts, and you have to give them a reason to subscribe to your blog. Make sure you are prioritizing quality content because it doesn’t matter how many posts you have; people are not going to want to stay on your blog for long if it’s not well done. People who get the most views often write less often and prioritize quality content because good writing matters.
Website that is difficult to navigate- When I started my blog, I used a lot of fancy designs because they were more fun, and I thought it made my blog look better but I stopped using them and switched to solid colors because although designs can be fun, they’re not accessible for some people. Some of the designs were very difficult to read through, and if people can’t easily read your blog, they are not going to subscribe to it. Your blog should be very easy to navigate because if it’s not and people can’t find the subscribe button, they are going to seek out another blogger. Accessibility matters with your blog because blogs that are difficult to read and very difficult to navigate get less views than simpler sites.
Not sharing posts other than your own– When I started my blog, for the first year or two, I mostly only shared my own posts, and it wasn’t until I realized that sharing posts that are not your own increases your reach. It is important to consistently promote your own blog, but don’t forget to share posts from others because when you share someone else’s post, they are more likely to share yours. You can grow and not share posts from others, but you will grow faster when you do because sharing posts from others not only benefits you but also helps them.
When you are trying to build your blog, consistency is important, but that alone is not enough to grow anymore, and you have to prioritize quality content. You will make a lot of mistakes as a blogger that may affect your ability to grow, and that is okay because no one knows everything, and the most important thing is to recognize it and fix it . You should not beat yourself up over your mistakes because everyone makes them, and the most important isn’t that you made a mistake but it’s that you learn from it. If you are a new creator, you will probably make more mistakes than someone who has been online for years, and that is okay because if you feel stuck, you can also ask for help from a more experienced blogger. Most people online are more than willing to help you because we are all here to support each other. What mistakes have you made as a blogger?
