Fitness Reminders For When You Feel Like Quitting

Regular exercise has a lot of health benefits and will make your life easier, but it is not easy to get in shape. Most people who have committed to exercise want to get results because there is nothing worse than putting in so much work and not seeing any change. I have been exercising regularly for over a decade and can say that it is hard to improve your fitness, but it is so worth it if you stay committed. People sometimes get frustrated when they are putting their bodies through so much pain and not seeing the results they were hoping for, and quit too soon. Fitness is something that takes time to achieve, and you shouldn’t expect overnight results. People who are new to exercise sometimes get frustrated more easily because they didn’t realize that gaining strength is not as easy as influencers make you want to believe. Some days are harder than others, and when things get hard, sometimes people need fitness reminders to keep them on track. In this post, I am going to give you a few fitness reminders for those days when you want to quit.

Sweating does not mean your workout was more effective– When it comes to exercise, sometimes people think that sweating means your workout was more effective, and if you didn’t sweat, you didn’t push yourself hard enough. I love a good workout that gets me super sweaty because it makes me feel accomplished, but you should never judge the effectiveness of your workout by the amount of sweat your body is producing. Some people sweat more than others, and even though you didn’t sweat a lot, that doesn’t mean you didn’t have a good workout. People who exercise indoors with air-conditioning may not sweat as much as someone who walks or runs outside in the heat. Some people get more sweaty because of genetics, while others may hardly sweat at all. Sweating does not mean your workout was more or less effective, and you shouldn’t get discouraged if you don’t sweat a lot.

Not every workout is going to be your best- When it comes to exercise, sometimes people think that every workout is going to be better than the last, but the reality is fitness is not that clean. Some days you will have a great workout where you break records, others will be terrible, but most will be pretty average. Don’t get discouraged if you have a bad workout because it happens to all of us, and it is completely normal to occasionally have a terrible workout. You are not a failure if you have a terrible workout, and it’s part of being human. If you are consistently having bad workouts, you might want to adjust your goals, but you shouldn’t beat yourself up over one bad workout. Some days you aren’t going to have as much energy and won’t perform as well, and you just have to accept that and try again tomorrow.

You are not always going to want to exercise- When it comes to fitness, sometimes people will say to exercise when you are feeling motivated and it feels good. As a disabled person who has been exercising for years, I don’t necessarily think that motivation should be the only thing that drives your workout. Some people love exercising and do not struggle to motivate themselves to do their exercise routine, while others hate exercising and struggle to be consistent. If you don’t enjoy exercise, and wait until you are feeling motivated, your workout will probably never get done because you will never be feeling motivated. I don’t struggle to motivate myself to strength train, but cardio is not my favorite, and most days I have to force myself to do it. Some days you will be motivated to exercise, while other days you will be more tired and will want to do anything but exercise. You shouldn’t let motivation drive your workout, especially if you hate exercising, because most days you aren’t going to want to do it.

Your brain gives up before your body does– When you are exercising and you start to get tired, sometimes people think that they have to quit, which may sometimes be true. If you are in the first five minutes of your workout and feel like you have to quit, it is likely that you aren’t completely wiped out, and your brain is giving up, not your body. Fitness is just physical, and it’s mental too, because our brains will give up before our bodies do. When I am walking and start to get tired, sometimes my brain starts to convince me that I need to quit, and I have to remind myself that I have done this workout dozens of times and am not tired. Fitness isn’t just about the physical aspects of it, and your mindset plays a major role because you don’t always have to listen to your brain when it tells you that you need to stop. Workouts can become easier when you work on your fitness mindset because sometimes that is the hardest part.

Just because someone has abs, it doesn’t mean they are healthier- When you are new to fitness, it is easy to start comparing yourself to people online. Social media is fake, and even though someone has abs, that doesn’t mean they are healthier than you. Fitness looks different on everyone because health doesn’t have a specific look, and even though someone looks healthy, that doesn’t mean they are. Some people with abs are stuck in diet culture and are struggling with eating disorders or disordered eating. You shouldn’t compare yourself to people online and try to look like them because the way someone looks does not equal health.

It is hard to improve your fitness, but you have to be patient because strength does not happen overnight. It can sometimes take years of consistency before you start to see significant progress. Fitness is hard to achieve, and some people want quick fixes, but there is no quick fix for health, and you have to be willing to put in the work. Enjoy the journey, and celebrate small wins because you will be more likely to stick with it when you enjoy the process. I don’t love everything about my workout, but I do love seeing how much strength I am getting from my workouts, and that is what keeps me going. Don’t compare yourself to others because it’s easy to get discouraged when you compare yourself to people who have probably been exercising longer than you. Fitness is not a destination, and it doesn’t matter how long you have been exercising; you can always improve your fitness level. What would you tell someone trying to get in shape?
