How To Beat Writer’s Block

When you are a new blogger with less than one-hundred posts, it is hard to come up with new ideas, and you probably have a bunch, but as you create more blog posts, it becomes a little bit harder to come up with new ideas, and you may struggle with writer’s block. Bloggers sometimes do not struggle with writer’s block as much as someone who is writing a college essay who is told what to write, but even professional bloggers sometimes struggle with coming up with the right words to say, because when you have thousands of posts, it can be difficult to remember what you have already written about and come up with fresh ideas. I have not struggled with writer’s block on my new blog just yet because I have a little over one hundred posts, but I have been online for seven years and have run multiple blogs with hundreds of posts, so I am all too familiar with the dreaded writer’s block. There is nothing worse than staring at a computer screen for hours and needing to write a post, but can’t come up with the right words to say. How do you overcome writer’s block when you need to get some writing done? In this post, I am going to talk about how I avoid writer’s block.

Write about topics that interest you– If you are in school and have been instructed to write a paper on a topic that is boring to you, there is nothing you can do about that. When you are a blogger, it’s different because you are the boss of your own blog and don’t have to force yourself to write about topics that bore you to tears. As a blogger, it is easy to get obsessed with stats and write about topics because they are popular, but it’s important to remember that even though one blogger was able to write about something that got thousands of views, that doesn’t mean that if you write about the same topic, you will get the same results. Write about topics that interest you because when you write about posts that are boring to you, it’s going to take three times as long. Popular topics don’t always do better, and sometimes it’s the unique topics that haven’t been done a million times that get more views. Be yourself and have fun with your blog because when you are passionate about your writing, everything flows, and you may be able to get a post done in an hour that would take twice that if you were writing about something you didn’t care about.

Get enough sleep– If you are struggling with insomnia and not sleeping enough it is going to be a whole lot harder to write a blog post because when you aren’t well-rested you don’t think as clearly. I can’t stress enough how important it is for bloggers to get good sleep because when you sleep enough you are more productive and make fewer mistakes. Sleep is so important for health because sleep deprivation can cause you to get sick more often and increases your risk for some diseases and there are so many more negative health outcomes that can be caused by not sleeping enough. I am able to write a blog post when I am a little sleep-deprived because I am used to poor sleep due to pain, but I have noticed I create better content when I have better focus and am not sleep-deprived. People often underestimate the power of good sleep and think that they can function just as well with little sleep, but you will do better work with good rest whether you notice it or not. Sleep should be a priority for anyone who wants to be productive and if you are a blogger who doesn’t sleep well that could be the reason you are struggling with writer’s block.

Take a break- If you have been staring at a blank computer screen for over an hour and still can’t come up with the right words, it is your body’s way of saying to take a break. When I am struggling with writer’s block sometimes, I will get up and eat a snack because a lot of the time, all you need is a short ten-minute break to help you refocus. If you are trying too hard to write a blog post on a particular topic and the words are not coming to you, sometimes the problem is, you are trying too hard and need to walk away from it and focus on something else for a while for the words to come to you. I have had times when I was struggling to get a blog post done, but after I took a short break, I was able to crank that blog post out in an hour. People sometimes think that taking a break will set them back, and it is true that if your break is too long, you might not get it done, but a short break can be good.

Change the scenery–  As a blogger, I am the most focused when I write in the same location every time because I don’t get distracted by other things around me, since I know what is around me, but some people do need a change in scenery and have better focus when they have something different to look at. If you are writing at your desk and are struggling to come up with the right words to say, maybe try moving to your living room or walking outside and see if that helps improve your focus, because sometimes a change in scenery is all you need.

Eliminate distractions-Social media is a great way to entertain yourself when you have nothing to do but it can also be a major distraction when you have a deadline and need to get stuff done, because most people would rather watch cute cat videos all day than go to work. When I am trying to get a blog post and need to focus, I do not look at my phone until I am done because I know that as soon as I start looking at my Instagram notifications, I will get distracted and feel like I need to respond. Some bloggers use social media to promote their blog and need to look at their notifications on a regular basis, but if you are trying to get some writing done it is okay if a Facebook notification goes unanswered for a few hours.  Social media is a major distraction when you are trying to write because you can’t truly be focused on writing a blog post and be scrolling through social media at the same time. Do your best to eliminate distractions because the more focused you are the less likely you are the less likely you will be to experience writer’s block. I always silence my notifications when I am writing, so I am never tempted to scroll through social media when I should be writing, because procrastination is your worst enemy. Social media presence is important for bloggers, but you have to be able to set boundaries for yourself and walk away from it.

Plan blog posts ahead of time- People often wonder how bloggers can create hundreds of articles without running out of ideas, and it’s simple: we have days when we write and days when we plan ideas. Planning blog posts ahead of time can be so helpful for preventing writer’s block because it’s going to be very difficult to build a successful blog when you are winging it and don’t have any kind of plan. Some of the best bloggers are very organized and could tell you what types of posts they are planning on doing for the next month. Writing will be so much easier when you have a list of ideas because you won’t have to scramble to find an idea, and all you have to do is write. Planning posts ahead of time can be very helpful for avoiding writer’s block because it gives you more time to figure out what your next topic is going to be when you are a little proactive.

Most bloggers have experienced writer’s block at one time or another because when you have hundreds of posts, it’s hard to come up with new ideas, but it does get easier the more you create content. Consistency can also help avoid writer’s block because when you are consistent, you become more experienced, and it’s easier to get a block post done. Writer’s block is frustrating, but when you make blogging a habit and find a schedule that works for you, it gets easier because sometimes the reason you are struggling isn’t that you have no ideas, but it’s that you don’t blog enough and lack experience. If you experience writer’s block as a blogger, do not get discouraged because it takes time for blogging to become second nature, and you shouldn’t compare yourself to professionals who very rarely get writer’s block.
