Bad Blogging Habits You Need To Break

Listen To This Post

Blogging is very therapeutic, and you can learn a lot from your fellow bloggers, but it takes a lot of work to build a blog and requires you to spend a lot of time sitting at your computer writing posts. Your health should always be a higher priority than your blog because if you aren’t well, you can’t create quality content and show up for your readers. It is easy to be in the zone and get focused on creating blog posts, and engage in unhealthy habits, unintentionally. As a disabled person, I am more aware of my habits because I know that I have a disability that makes me more prone to things such as constipation and UTIs, but even knowing that, sometimes I get busy and engage in unhealthy habits that I end up paying for later. I really try not to engage in unhealthy habits while I am writing blog posts because blogging isn’t worth it if it causes you to become ill, but if you aren’t actively thinking about how much water you drank today, it’s easy to get behind. I think we all have done something that has negatively impacted our health that we should not have done. As a disabled blogger, I am not afraid to admit that sometimes I engage in unhealthy habits while writing and do things that are not healthy. What are some unhealthy blogging habits that you should break? In this post, I am going to talk about some bad blogging habits that you should try to break for better health.

Not going to the bathroom– When you start writing and are in the zone, the last thing you want to do is get up to pee because when you are in a good writing flow, getting up can disrupt your focus and make you forget something important that you want to put in a blog post. As a disabled blogger, I am able to write a blog post in two to three hours because I have been online for seven years and have had lots of practice, but it hasn’t always been that way. When I started blogging and was less experienced, I could not write blog posts quickly, and it took me all day to write a five-hundred-word post, which is about half of what I do now, and if I had held in my pee until I was done writing, I would have caused some serious bladder problems. It is not healthy for anyone to hold in their pee for long periods of time, but it can be even worse for someone with Spina Bifida who has urinary incontinence because those muscles are damaged. You can make the bladder issues you already have even worse by not going to the bathroom on time. I will quite literally pee my pants if I let my bladder get too full because I don’t have the muscles to be able to hold for extended periods of time. If you are in a situation where there is no bathroom to pee, it’s okay to occasionally hold it in, but don’t unnecessarily hold in your pee because it’s a terrible habit to have.

Skipping meals- I am able to write blog posts relatively fast, and if I didn’t eat a meal before I started blogging, which I always do, I would still have the opportunity to eat a late lunch because I am usually done writing by two or three. Less experienced bloggers are not going to be able to write posts as fast because it takes a lot of practice to develop that skill. It is so important for bloggers to fuel themselves properly because it will be more difficult to create quality when you are feeling sluggish and all you want to do is take a nap. Food is fuel, and it’s so important that as a blogger, you nourish your body properly because if you aren’t eating enough, you won’t have the energy to create your best work. If blogging takes you all day, keep snacks at your desk to maintain your energy because skipping meals often makes you ravenous later in the day.

Skipping your workout- If you have the ability to exercise, it is so important that you do because it improves your cardiovascular health, strength, and flexibility, which we all could use a little more of. Blogging doesn’t take a toll on your body physically because you aren’t doing manual labor, but it can mentally exhaust you because you have to think while writing a blog post, and like most jobs, sometimes you are tired after you’re done writing, and the last thing you want to do is a workout. There is nothing wrong with skipping a workout or two because we all get busy and don’t have time for a workout, but if you have a desk job and are sitting a majority of the day, it’s so important that you prioritize exercise. Exercising before you start blogging can sometimes be helpful if you know you will be too tired to get it in afterward, but it’s so important that you don’t put exercise in the rearview mirror unless you have a disability and are physically unable to.

Not drinking enough water- As a disabled person, I am more aware of the fact that I need to be drinking an adequate amount of water because I am more prone to constipation and UTI infections, but not everyone has problems like I do, and thinks about how important water is for your body. Water is so important for your body because it helps keep your skin clear and prevents health problems, such as migraine attacks that can happen to anyone. You may not have my disability and get easily constipated, but anyone can get constipated from not drinking enough water, and no one is invincible.  Make sure you are staying hydrated while you’re blogging, and if you struggle to remember, keep a water bottle at your desk that will remind you, because constipation is very painful and preventable for a vast majority of people.

When you are writing blog posts, it can be easy to forget about the time and engage in unhealthy habits, which wouldn’t be a big deal if you only did it once, but for most people, it happens more than once. As a disabled person, I try to actively think about my health habits because I don’t always get pain when I am constipated, and likely won’t realize that I have a problem until it’s too late and I am in horrible pain. When it comes to blogging, your health should be a priority because you can’t create quality posts if you aren’t eating enough and can barely stay awake. There is no job that is worth the risk of causing a health issue because disability is permanent and is not always reversible once you have caused a problem. Be mindful of your health habits while blogging, and get up every once in a while, because your body will thank you! What bad blogging habits do you have that you want to break?
