When you start a blog and don’t have a lot of content up it is easy to come up with new ideas because you haven’t done anything yet but as time goes on it becomes harder and harder to come up with new ideas. Blogs thrive on content and bloggers constantly have to be thinking of new ideas because if you aren’t actively creating new posts for your blog, you can’t expect it to grow. Writing comes naturally to me because I have been blogging for seven years and it’s second nature to me but not everyone can come up with new ideas as easily as I can and some people run out of ideas. It is important to consistently come up with new ideas because promoting old posts only works for so long, but it can be hard to come up with new ideas when you have hundreds of posts. Running out of blog post ideas is a blogger’s worst nightmare because we can’t grow our blogs without content and in my opinion, coming up with new ideas is the hardest part of blogging. At the moment my blog only has a little over one hundred posts and I am not struggling to come up with new ideas but eventually, it will get to a point where it will become harder. How do you not run out of blog post ideas? In this post, I am going to share what I do to prevent myself from running out of ideas.
Plan posts ahead of time– I am a big believer in writing posts ahead of time and scheduling them because life happens and sometimes you are not able to write a post when you want to. I write posts a couple of days a week because I need to build my blog to make money, but I am not always writing and there are days when I focus on getting posts out and days when I plan what my next post is going to be. Planning is a blogger’s best friend because when you know what you are going to write ahead of time you can get posts done quicker. I don’t always write a bunch of posts in advance, but I do always plan ideas on my days off because not having an idea can prevent me from blogging and planning is your best defense at making sure that does not happen. Make a content calendar and plan what topics you are going to write and when because it makes writing faster and you want to be an organized blogger to make work easier.
Ableism is everywhere- As a disabled blogger, I base my entire blog on educating people about ableism and helping people to understand what it means to be accessible because a lot of people think that it ends at ramps. When you blog about disability, the possibilities for content are endless because most people don’t know what ableism is and it’s everywhere. If you are a disabled blogger, you can get a lot of content ideas from past experiences you have had and comments people say around you that are ableist because disabled people are facing ableism in their everyday lives. I get a vast majority of content ideas from ableist experiences I have had and comments that I have heard people say that were said with good intentions but are harmful to disabled people. Pay attention to things happening in your life because you would be surprised by how many content ideas you can get from experiences you have had and ableism you see on TV.
Ask your readers- If you are struggling to come up with new ideas, some creators will literally ask their audience what type of content they would like to see. I think that it can be helpful to ask your audience for ideas because bloggers aren’t mind readers but not everyone has audiences who will tell them what they want to read, and sometimes you have to figure that out for yourself. There is no guarantee that your readers will give you suggestions but it can never hurt to ask because you never know what your readers are thinking and if there is something specific they want you to write about. The worst thing that can happen is they give you nothing.
Watch some TV- Ableism is everywhere in the media, and I don’t think I have ever turned on the news and not heard a newscaster say something ableist because ableism in the media is problematic. I am not usually the type to tell people to watch some TV but I think it can be very helpful for content creators who are struggling to come up with content ideas because you can get a lot from TV shows when you pay attention. As a disabled creator, I am always looking for movies about disabled characters but I don’t watch them for entertainment purposes because I don’t like most of them and mostly watch them to show my audience if the movie is worth watching and the inaccuracies of it because non-disabled people miss a lot of things and think that inspirational movies about disabled people are good when they are so far from that.
Blog less– People who are new to blogging sometimes think that they need to create as many posts as possible because it is often believed that more is better and use to think that. Blogging daily works for some people and it can be helpful for people who don’t have a lot of content on their blog because the more content you have the more views your blog will get but it’s not for everyone. Some people can blog daily and never run out of ideas, but it can be hard because you have less time to come up with your next idea. If you are struggling to come up with ideas instead of blogging every single day or multiple times a day, try blogging less. There is more time to come up with new ideas when you blog less because when you write posts more often you get more up at a faster rate than someone who only blogs twice a week and is more likely to run out of ideas. At the moment I am blogging most days of the week, but I do plan on reducing my blogging early next year when I hope to have a sizable amount of posts on my blog. Blogging more can increase your views faster but it’s not worth it if it’s causing you to run out of ideas too quickly.
Listen to people- When I am having a conversation with someone, my blogging brain is still working, and I can never completely shut it off. You can get a lot of ideas from conversations you have with people, and when I am talking with family, a lot of the time, I am paying extra attention to what people are saying to see if they are giving me something I can use in a blog post. My family doesn’t often tell me ideas, but I have gotten tons of content ideas from my family members who aren’t trying by the conversations I have had with people. People often think I don’t pay attention to things, and there are some topics I might not be paying attention to, but because of my blog, I am paying more attention than you think.
Writing a blog post is hard because you have to come up with the right words to say which can be a struggle if you are not experienced but that is not the hardest part of blogging. It is important to consistently create new posts, but you are not going to be able to do that if you don’t plan posts ahead of time and get too excited and write too many posts in a short period of time. Some people struggle to come up with new ideas for their blogs because it is hard, but it does get easier over time, and it just takes a little practice. Don’t quit blogging because you had a couple of days where you struggled to write but instead take a break. Never underestimate the power of a blogging break because sometimes the problem isn’t that you don’t have ideas but it’s that you are working too much and are burnt out. Breaks help you refresh and provide a lot of clarity which helps you get out of that stuck feeling that so many of us struggle with. How do you never run out of blog post ideas?
