Why Do Bloggers Quit?

Blogging does not require a lot of physical effort and is something that most people can do, but nothing is forever, and even the best bloggers who clearly love what they do sometimes quit. Some bloggers will let their audience know when they no longer want to blog anymore as a common courtesy, but we are not required to tell people when we are quitting, and some people disappear off the Internet and close their blogs without warning. I can understand why some bloggers may not want to tell their audience when they are quitting because sometimes people try to talk you out of it, and you can avoid all that by not telling people and just doing it. My blog is like therapy and I do not plan on quitting anytime soon, but even I will reach a point when I don’t want to blog anymore because no one lasts forever and eventually blogs die. There are a lot of reasons why someone may choose to quit their blog and not everyone will quit for the same reasons. Why do bloggers quit? In this post, I am going to share a couple of reason why bloggers may quit blogging.

Some people die– Some bloggers plan when they are going to quit, but unfortunately, it’s not always planned, and sometimes you get sick and die unexpectedly. I have had many followers who have died for different reasons and sometimes people have a surgery that has complications, while other times they get depressed and commit suicide. When I have a surgery, I always like to make it public because although I have never died during a surgery (obviously), it doesn’t mean it will never happen. I think it’s so important to let my followers know about surgeries, that way if people don’t hear from me for months, they can assume something has happened. I do hope that if something terrible were to happen to me that someone would make it public, but I can’t control what people do if I am gone. Bloggers sometimes stop blogging because they die unexpectedly and were not able to warn their audience.

Some people burnout– Despite what some people believe, bloggers have to work more than twenty minutes a day to build their blogs. When you are a blogger, you have to put out so much content to get noticed and sometimes people get burned out from it and quit. When you are a disabled blogger, it is common for bloggers to quit because it is harder to grow a blog about disability, and sometimes people struggle to get views and don’t feel like it’s worth it. My blog does not generate any income, but I do love blogging about my disability to educate people, and I still would do it if the only people who read my blog were my family. Bloggers’ burnout is real and is the reason I dropped my posting to three days a week, because sometimes you need a break. Some bloggers who have burned out from blogging will take a few months off, but sometimes you quit entirely.

Some people have health issues- It is not uncommon for a disabled blogger who has a lot of health issues to stop blogging because of health issues. Some people become unwell, but it’s not because they are dead, but sometimes your health takes a turn and you’re in too much pain to blog. I have started writing extra posts because I live with chronic pain that is unpredictable and never know when severe pain will prevent me from blogging, but not all creators will be able to do that. Sometimes you have unexpected health problems and need to close your blog down to focus on self-care and improve your health. It is frustrating to have to shut your blog down due to poor health and it is a tough decision, but sometimes you have no choice. You should always prioritize your health before your blog because blogging is not worth it if it makes you unwell.

Trolls can sometimes be a problem- When you put yourself out there online, it is likely that you will run into a troll or two. Some bloggers do not have an issue with trolls, but if you are disabled, sometimes, you do because people think that talking about your challenges is negative and aren’t very kind. As a disabled blogger, I try to not take comments that are very rude personally, because I know people online do not know me as much as they think they do, but trolls sometimes do get to you. It is sad that bloggers sometimes feel like they have to quit blogging because they are being harassed by trolls, but it happens all too often. It is never okay to harass someone online because you don’t have to comment if you disagree with a post, and can’t be kind about it, but some people want attention. There is no way you can completely eliminate trolls, and sometimes quitting is your only option.

Sometimes your interests change– There have been times I have thought about quitting blogging and starting a different hobby, which I have decided not to do. Bloggers sometimes stop blogging because they lose interest in their blog and want to do something else, and that is okay. Interests sometimes change, and the reason your favorite blogger quit isn’t sad but it’s because blogging no longer brings them joy and they found a different outlet.

People sometimes get depressed- Some people with mental illness will blog about their depression to teach people that depression is not just sadness. If you struggle with mental illness and your depression takes a turn, sometimes you stop blogging. I have known a lot of great creators who have stopped blogging because they got depressed and didn’t have the energy to write a post. Content creation can sometimes negatively affect your mental health, and I don’t blame people for quitting blogging if it makes you less depressed. Blogging with depression can be difficult because mental illness is draining, and some people lose the desire to blog.

Blogging can be very therapeutic, and a lot of people do it for a very long but sometimes you don’t want to do it anymore and that is okay because bloggers come and go. There are a lot of reasons why bloggers quit and it is a very personal decision that you won’t usually make public until you are absolutely certain you want to do it. If a blogger has told you that they want to quit, you should respect that choice and not try to talk them out of it, because you never know what led them to make that decision. I think that every blogger has thought about quitting and not everyone acts on it or will tell you when they do because sometimes quitting is a spur-of-the-moment type thing. If you are a blogger, have you thought about quitting? These are only a few reasons why someone might choose to quit, but it’s not a complete list of everything because the reality is you’ll never know why someone quit unless you ask them.
