When it comes to blogging, sometimes bloggers feel underappreciated because people think that all bloggers do is write blog posts, and often say things to us that are a little rude. Writing is only one part of blogging, and there is so much more to building a successful blog that the average person doesn’t see because there is so much that goes on behind the scenes of a blog beyond writing. Bloggers need support because there is a lot of competition, and when stats are low, sometimes it feels like no one reads your blog, and that is when people don’t see a point in blogging anymore and quit. Content creators need support from readers, but sometimes we don’t get as much support as we could because people don’t understand how hard it is to build online and think that what we do doesn’t take a lot of skill. There are a lot of things that I have heard people tell bloggers that shock me, and I will never understand why anyone would even think to say that comment. What shouldn’t you say to a blogger? In this post, I am going to talk about a few things that I have heard people say to bloggers that you should never say.
Blogging is easy and anyone can do it– There are a lot of careers that are a lot harder than blogging, and I don’t think that blogging is hard. It is always shocking to me when non-bloggers say, “Blogging is easy and anyone can do it.” Yes, is true that anyone can create a blog because it’s not rocket science, but not everyone can create a successful blog, and that takes a lot of time and skill. If you wouldn’t tell your friend who has an office job that they chose an easy career choice, then don’t tell bloggers that blogging is easy, because someone may take offense to that. It is always surprising to me that people are quick to say how easy blogging is when they have never done it. Writing a blog post is not that difficult for me now because I’ve written hundreds of posts, and it’s second nature to me, but in the beginning, I struggled with blogging and had no idea what I was doing. Please stop telling bloggers that blogging is easy and that everyone can do it because it hurts and makes me feel like you don’t appreciate what I do.
Blogging is not a real job- I am always hesitant to tell people that I am trying to make an income off of my blog because sometimes people will say, “Blogging is not a real job, and you should get a real one.” If you build your blog enough, and you can get the attention of a brand make a full-time income because blogging is considered an online business. I have more flexibility in my hours because I work for myself, but I have to work just as hard as anyone else, maybe even harder, since I don’t have employees to do some of my work for me. It is hard to make a full-time income off a blog, and only a small percentage of bloggers are able to do that successfully, but if you can make money off of it, it’s a real job. Some people are not able to work because of disability or chronic illness, and content creation is your only choice for making money. Writing is considered a real job and many bloggers write books and articles for other companies and make money off of it.
You should work for free- People sometimes will tell bloggers that we should work for free and not charge brands when they ask us to write an article for them. There is nothing wrong with accepting free work, and in the beginning, you might want to do that to get experience, but there are times when you should charge brands. Sometimes, brands will ask you to do things that will take you several weeks of working a couple of hours a day to complete, and you deserve to be compensated for that because you are taking up someone’s time. Bloggers shouldn’t work for free because sometimes our blogs are the only way we make money. As a disabled creator, I have struggled to find a real job, and if I never charged brands, I’d never make money. Bloggers should be rewarded for the hours it takes to write an article for someone else, and they will be taken advantage of if we do everything for free.
I don’t read your blog- My blog is not going to be for everyone, and that is okay because you can’t please everyone, but never feel the need to tell me you hated a post, and don’t read my blog. There are some things that you should keep to yourself, and telling a blogger you don’t like their blog is one of them. If you love my blog, please tell me what you liked about it so I can create more content like it, but if you hate it, keep it to yourself.
No one reads blogs anymore- People sometimes think that no one reads blogs anymore because video content is more popular. Video content is more popular than blogging, but you should never tell a blogger that no one reads blogs, because people still do, and if they didn’t, my blog wouldn’t be getting more readers with every single post. Bloggers sometimes struggle to get views, but it’s not because no one reads blogs, and a lot of the time it has to do with their social media strategy, and if you market your blog well, you will start to see growth. Blogging is not outdated, and people still read blogs because not everyone has an interest in being a YouTuber, and that is okay. Blogging is a great way for businesses to stay connected with their audience, and people still read them.
Don’t you blog for attention?- People sometimes think that disabled and chronically ill people blog about their health because they love attention and will say, “Did you start a blog to get attention?” No, I didn’t start a blog because I love being the center of attention and I actually hate that, and I started one to break disability stigma and help disabled people cope with their disability.
Blogging is not as hard as most careers, but it does take some skill, because you don’t become an overnight success, and it takes some people years to make money. As a disabled health blogger, I have to be vulnerable and talk about health issues that most people would never do publicly, which is hard sometimes and, in the beginning, made me very uncomfortable. There is so much more to blogging than writing blog posts, and I think that sometimes people say things to bloggers that they should have kept to themselves because they don’t understand the amount of skill it takes to build a successful blog. If you want your blogger friends to continue blogging, don’t say things that will bring someone down and make them feel underappreciated. Bloggers sometimes need words of encouragement because not everyone is kind, and it’s so important that you are lifting people up instead of tearing them down. What would you never say to a blogger?
