When you start to consider building a brand online, one of the things you have to think about is whether you want to start a blog or YouTube channel. Blogging and YouTube can both make you a full-time income and I don’t think one is better than the other and it depends on the individual because some people may not thrive at writing or video content. Some bloggers have both YouTube and a blog because having both can help increase your blog views. It is a lot more work to have both a blog and a YouTube channel because you have to think of content for both channels, but some people do it. I have created Instagram reels and used to create audio posts, which I hope to get back to soon to make my blog more accessible, but that is the extent of video. I have made the choice to stick to blogging and not start a YouTube channel because it was never something I was interested in. Why don’t I have a YouTube channel? In this post, I am going to share why I only have a blog and not a YouTube channel.
YouTube is a more expensive hobby- When you start a blog, it is often recommended that you purchase a domain name because having. WordPress in your URL screams amateur and is not something you want if you are trying to make money. Blogging can sometimes cost money, if you’re serious about making money off of your blog, but it can be free. YouTube can be a more expensive hobby because although it doesn’t cost money to create a YouTube channel, sometimes you have to buy equipment you wouldn’t need with a blog which can be expensive. I chose to start a blog instead of a YouTube channel because I live on a limited income, and it’s a cheaper hobby. I can’t afford to buy an expensive camera, and don’t have to with my blog because I am not a photo blogger. Blog hosting can be a little expensive but it is a little cheaper than a YouTube channel because you don’t have to buy a bunch of fancy equipment. Yes, you can film content from a cellphone, but it’s not the same quality, and if I were going to spend more time creating video content, I would want it to be the best quality it can be and it’s not going to be the best from a cellphone.
Video editing is not my strength- It takes a lot less time to edit a blog post than it does to edit a video. Video editing has never been my strength, and my way of editing a video is to start over and keep doing it until I create a version that I love. These days, the Internet makes it easier to learn new skills, and I know if I wanted to learn the proper way to edit a video, I could teach myself, but I have no desire to learn. I have never enjoyed creating video content and hate it so much that I struggle to create a thirty-second reel. Video editing will never be my strength because I enjoy blogging a whole lot more, and if I were to start creating video content, it would not be very good because I’d hate it, and you would be able to see that in my content. The extent of my video content will always be reels and audio posts because I don’t get as much enjoyment from creating video content and don’t think it’s necessary to force myself to create a YouTube channel for a little more views.
I am an introvert- People who are more extroverted tend to thrive at video content, while people who are more introverted typically thrive at blogging. I am a very introverted person and can better express myself through my words rather than through a camera. I have a speech delay, and sometimes I get anxious talking through a camera because there are some sounds that I struggle to say. When I am talking through a camera, I get anxious that I am not talking clearly enough for people to understand, and sometimes freeze, but I don’t have that problem when I am writing. I have somewhat overcome the fear of talking on a camera because I force myself to do reels, but I am still an introvert and can’t express myself on camera as well as I can through my words.
It takes a lot more time- When I used to create audio posts for my blog, I never realized how much more time it will take. You have a lot less free time when you do both because once you upload content to one channel, you have to think about the other one. I like having more free time because it helps me think more clearly and avoid burnout, and you aren’t going to have a lot of free time when you do both writing and video content. It takes a lot more time, and I struggle with keeping on top of the things I already have and the last thing I need to do is add more. I don’t understand how people juggle both because having just one can take a lot of your time.
If you want to expand your reach, a YouTube channel and a blog can help you reach that goal, but it’s not a requirement. Some bloggers choose to start a YouTube channel and a blog, while others prefer one over the other. I am a strong believer that you should choose the hobby that you can thrive at the most because you don’t have to force yourself to do something you know you won’t be good at. It is good to do things that push you slightly out of your comfort zone because that is how we grow, and your first blog post or video will not be your best, but it will improve with practice. If your hobby is causing too much anxiety and is not getting better with time, it might be a good idea to try something else because content creation shouldn’t be causing high stress levels. Someday I may get more confident with creating video content and have both, but for now I am enjoying blogging and have no plans for starting a YouTube channel.
