When Shouldn’t You Blog?

When you have a blog, you have to spend a lot of time creating content because you are the CEO of your own blog, and it’s up to you to keep your blog updated so readers keep coming back. I blog most days of the week and don’t mind writing a lot because it’s like therapy for me, and I enjoy it. Blogging is fun, and I wouldn’t have a blog if I hated it, but there are times when you need to recognize that it has to be your day off because rest days can provide clarity, and you will be a better blogger when you are thinking clearly. Bloggers have to work a lot, and the work of a blogger is never truly done because most bloggers don’t have a team of writers to create content for them, and there is always something you can do to improve your blog. I take off holidays from my blog, but for the most part, I don’t take a lot of days off because I am at home all the time, and blogging is how I entertain myself. Sometimes I do take days off because you can have all the time in the world to blog and still have days when you are feeling it. When should you take a rest day and not blog? In this post, I am sharing a few times that I will take a rest day and not blog.

When you are angry- If I got in a heated argument with my sister and am very upset, I will not walk away from that argument and immediately start blogging because you should not blog if you are not in the right head space emotionally. Blog posts that are written when you are angry sometimes turn into rants, and you may end up writing something that you are going to regret later on. I am a strong believer that your blog should not be used as a way to say horrible things about family members publicly, and you may end up doing that if you blog when you are angry. Give yourself time to cool down before writing a blog post because, although you can delete blog posts, you can’t take back hurt feelings. You should always be in the right headspace before writing a blog post because the type of content you will create when you are angry and calm will be very different. It is okay to write when you are angry, and it may help some people calm down, but don’t share it until you have cooled down, because you may have written something that doesn’t need to be on the Internet. You will be surprised by the thing you will write in a blog post when you are upset!

When I have limited time- I am able to write blog posts quickly because I have been online for eight years and have written hundreds of blog posts. Most days, I am at home and have nothing going on and can spend the entire day writing a blog post, but sometimes I do have medical appointments and don’t have as much time to write before that appointment. If I have to be at a doctor’s appointment in an hour, I won’t usually write a blog post until after that appointment, or I will wake up early to give myself more time. I never write blog posts when I am in a time crunch because you are more stressed when your post feels rushed, and the quality won’t be as good as it would be if you took your time. It is okay to take the day off if you don’t have time to write because it’s better to take the day off than to write a poorly written post that you are not proud of.

If I am not feeling well– As a disabled blogger who lives with pain, I am not able to write blog posts with zero pain because I am in pain constantly and don’t know what not being in pain feels like, but it must be great. I always blog in pain, but if my pain flares or I get the flu, I will not blog because it’s important to prioritize self-care when you aren’t well to get better. If I had a painful surgery, sometimes I will prepare posts ahead of time, but I won’t immediately start blogging as soon as I get home because writing with debilitating pain is distracting. If you aren’t feeling well and can’t blog for about a week or two, don’t stress over it because your readers will understand and will probably appreciate that you are taking time for yourself. Content that is created when you are well is going to be so much better than content that was created when you have the flu. I am able to write when I am sick, but often have more brain fog when I am not well, and usually will only write if I have something that is time-sensitive. Working when you are sick, if you don’t have to sometimes can make you sicker because you aren’t allowing your body to rest

If I am sleep-deprived- When you live with pain, sleeping can be a struggle, and many people in pain struggle with sleep almost every night. I don’t have great sleep because pain always wakes me up in the middle of the night, and I could always use a little more sleep, but some days, I have more difficulty sleeping than others. If I have very poor sleep and am struggling to stay awake, I will not force myself to write a blog post but will prioritize napping because not sleeping enough puts a lot of stress on your body and can negatively affect your health. I am able to write blog posts when I am a little sleep deprived, but it does take me a little longer because you aren’t thinking as clearly and are more likely to experience writer’s block. I won’t usually write with severe insomnia unless I have to because I know it won’t be my best work.

Most days, I am excited to write and have more time to write than someone who has to go to work for eight hours, five days a week. You can have a lot of time to write blog posts and still have days when you aren’t feeling it and need to take a day off. I schedule a lot of blog posts in advance and write on good days because you never know when your pain is going to flare and force you to rest. Consistency is so important for blog growth because no one can create content for you, but it is so important to be able to recognize when to write and when not to. There is no shame in taking rest days if you need them because blogger’s burnout is real and happens when you try to work too much. Everyone needs days off from work to recharge, even bloggers, because you should have a life outside of your blog. When do you take time off from your blog and not write?
