Happy New Year! In the New Year, a lot of people make new goals for themselves I love that because growth happens when we challenge ourselves but unfortunately, most resolutions will fail by the second week of January. Most people do not know what a realistic goal is, or were never serious to begin with when they made their. Some new resolution are completely ridiculous and impossible achieve in a year so people give up once they realize their goal is not reachable. I share a lot of my life online, but I don’t make all of my goals public and most of them I keep to myself and are private. I am a huge advocate for goal-setting and have nothing against New Year’s Resolutions, but if you want to set yourself up for success, it has to be reachable. There are some types of goals that you will never see me make because they are not within my control to achieve. What New Year’s Resolutions will you never see me make? In this post, I am sharing a few examples of New Year’s Resolutions that I will never make in the New Year.
Gain full mobility in my hips- I had hip replacement surgery about five years ago and lost a significant amount of mobility that has not returned. I go on walks most days of the week, and do isolated hip exercises to continue to gain hip strength, which has helped some, but I still have a long way to go before I have full range of motion. My goal is to continue to gain hip strength, but you will never see me make my goal to gain full mobility. I exercise every day to improve my strength, but at the end of the day, I can’t change my disability, and whether I end up getting my mobility back is not within my control. Your New Year’s Resolution should always be something that is within your complete control to achieve, and I only have some control over how much of my mobility comes back. I have been consistently trying to gain as much hip strength as I can to make my life easier, but I never expect to have full range of motion by the end of the year. If I was able to get my mobility back by exercising more, I think I would have done it by now and making goals like that would be setting myself up for failure.
Not have any surgeries- Some people with Spina Bifida will not need a lot of surgeries, but some people do. I have had more surgeries than years I have been alive, and I do hope that I will need very minimal surgeries in the New Year, if any at all. I can eat healthy, exercise, and prevent a lot of surgeries that are caused by poor health, but at the end of the day, I can’t change my disability. Sometimes I will need a surgery that was not in my complete control to prevent because I only have some control over my disability. When I was a child, I had more surgeries than I do now because as you become an adult, things become more stable, but I still sometimes will need a surgery. My New Year’s Resolution will never be to not have any surgeries because my health is not something that is within my complete control, and I can be doing everything right and still need a surgery.
Cure my chronic pain- Endometriosis does not always cause pain, but it can cause severe chronic pain in some people. I struggle with chronic pain because of endometriosis and am always looking for ways to improve my pain and quality of life in general. Never will you see me make my goal to cure my chronic pain because even if I got endometriosis surgery, there is still no guarantee it would cure my chronic pain. Some people who go through endometriosis surgery, get significant pain relief, while others don’t because surgery is not a cure for endometriosis. People with endometriosis who have had surgery may sometimes need multiple surgeries because it can grow back. My goal has always been to improve my chronic pain so I can do more things, but it is never to cure my chronic pain because the type of pain I live with has no cure.
Look like a celebrity- In the New Year, sometimes people will make ridiculous fitness goals and want to look like their favorite celebrity. I am always working to improve my fitness, but you will never see me make my goal to achieve a certain body type because how our bodies look is not within our complete control. You should never make your fitness goal to have the body of a celebrity because you may not have the same body type as your favorite celebrity. Celebrities can afford to have their own personal gym in their home, and hire the world’s best personal trainer and dietician that us regular people could never afford. You will never see me make my fitness goal to achieve a certain type because you can be follow a strict diet and exercise program, but you can’t change genetics. People sometimes struggle to achieve the body type they think they should have because it’s not in their genetics, which is why it’s not a good goal. It is important to have goals that improve your physical health, but don’t make goals to achieve a certain body type because it’s not always possible, and makes fitness all about vanity.
Go on a diet– In the New Year, there is a lot more pressure to start a diet because sometimes you gain weight during the holidays. Weight loss is great goal for those that need it to improve their health but I never feel the need to do it after holidays. I know that as soon as I get back into my regular routine that any weight gained during the holidays will come off and restrictive dieting for me is unnecessary and potentially dangerous.
Be more consistent online- These last couple of months, I have been struggling with more pain and fatigue and haven’t been able to post on social media as consistently as I have in the past, and have been forced to post less to have less pain. I do hope that will change because I would like to have the energy to grow my social media a little quicker. Some bloggers will set goals to post more consistently to grow their blogs quicker, which is a great goal for some people, but not one I will be setting. I live with unpredictable pain, which can make it more difficult to be consistent online.
In the New Year, a lot of people make new goals for themselves, and I love that but if you want to set yourself up for success, it is so important that you pick things that are within your complete control to achieve. I sometimes will make New Year’s Resolutions, but I don’t make them every year because it is okay if you don’t have a New Year’s Resolution. You can make goals any time of the year, and you don’t have to wait until January to start working toward your new goals. If you aren’t successful with reaching your New Year’s Resolution, you don’t have to wait until January to start again, because goals can be made anytime of the year. Don’t be one of those people who make a New Year’s Resolution and give up by the second week of January. If you fail, it’s not a sign that you should give up and it’s a sign that you might have set the standard too high and need to adjust your goal to make it reachable.
