When you start a blog, the first thing you have to do before you can write any posts is decide what your blog’s focus is going to be. Every blogger has a different interests, and some people love to niche down as much as possible, while others write about a variety of topics, and you don’t know what their blog is about because it’s not very clear. I think every blog has the potential to go viral because it doesn’t matter what you choose to write about, and it’s how you approach each topic that matters. You can be writing about popular topics and barely get seen and unpopular topics that get thousands of views. When I started my blog, I knew that I was going to write about my disability because there is so much inaccessibility and ableism in the world we live in but I didn’t want to make every single post about my disability, so I chose to call myself a disabled personal blogger. Why did I choose to call myself a disabled personal blogger? In this post, I am going to talk about a few reasons why I chose to be a disabled personal blogger instead of just a disabled blogger.
You have more freedom- Some bloggers choose to niche down and that is okay because you get to decide what your blog is going to be about, but it can be harder to come up with new ideas when you restrict yourself to one or two topics. When you are a personal blogger, you can write about anything, and if you want to write about the rocks you found in your backyard, then go for it. Some people may not be interested in reading about the rocks you found in your backyard so you always need to be thinking about that, but if you wrote about something slightly different it wouldn’t be frowned upon. I chose to be a disabled personal blogger because I love the freedom it gives me, and I am not restricted to only writing about my disability. People who niche down too much often run out of ideas faster than a personal blogger who can write about anything. I never want to be one of those bloggers who quits after one-year because I ran out of things to say.
Advocacy burnout is real- My blog mainly focuses on my disability because we will not change how the world views disabled people if we aren’t talking about it, but I strongly believe that we don’t need to be talking about our disabilities 24/7. Some disabled people choose to write only about their disability and that is okay but it’s not for me personally and I need a break from it from time to time. Advocacy is burnout is real because it can be exhausting to constantly be talking about your disability and sometimes, we need to give ourselves a break. Some disabled people completely burn out from advocating and quit blogging because it can feel like you are putting in so much work with little to no change. As a disabled person, I never want my advocacy work to sound like I am complaining all the time but sometimes I think that is how non-disabled people perceive it. Advocacy is important but not every single post needs to be about your disability and important to have a good balance.
I want people to see I have other interests- Non-disabled people sometimes think that everything a disabled person does revolves around their disability and it’s so important that we teach people that we have interests that have nothing to do with our disability. I am passionate about my advocacy work, but it’s not my only interest, and I like to have a variety on my blog to show people that I am interested in things that have nothing to do with my disability. I move differently than non-disabled people, but even though our bodies work differently than non-disabled people, we still have a lot of the same interests as people without disabilities. I have to think about my disability with everything I do, but I am also passionate about fitness, which has nothing to do with my disability. It’s important that non-disabled people see that I am just a girl who has legs that don’t work, but, in many ways, I am not that much different from you because I enjoy a lot of the same things as people without disabilities. I use my blog to educate people about disability, but I also want people to know that not everything in life revolves around my disability.
I get bored easily– I am the type of person who needs variety because I get bored easily and when that happens, I lose interest. I think that if I were to niche down too much, I would get bored with my blog, so I like to have some variety to prevent that from happening.
When you are a disabled blogger, it is a lot harder to run out of things to say because we live in a world that is surrounded by inaccessibility and ableism and there is always something to write about. If I wanted to, I could make my blog only about my disability and never run out of things to say, but I didn’t want to do that because I don’t want to talk about my disability all of the time. Advocacy can be exhausting because not everyone understands, and sometimes people mistake advocacy for negativity and give you a hard time about it. I love personal blogging because I don’t have to write about hard challenges every single post if I don’t want to, and can choose to write about something completely unrelated if I wanted to. Choosing to be a disabled personal blogger was a choice that I made and has worked well for me but not all disabled people will follow in my footsteps.
