If you want to be as healthy as possible and lessen the likelihood of diseases it is so important that you do what it takes to be as healthy as possible and practice healthy habits. It is hard to improve your health and sometimes we have to do things that we know are good for, but we don’t really want to because it’s time-consuming or we just don’t like to do it. When you are disabled, it is even more difficult to stay healthy because your body does not function as well as someone without a disability and sometimes you have to do things that take so much more time that you really don’t want to do. People sometimes avoid doing things that they know they should because they don’t have the motivation to do it, but you really shouldn’t avoid doing things that you know will benefit your health even if you don’t want to. As a disabled person, I think it is so important to practice healthy and do my best to give my body what it needs to function as best as it can but even though I eat healthy most of the time sometimes I slack and don’t do things I know What do things do people sometimes avoid doing that you shouldn’t? In this post, I am going to talk about a few things that I don’t always want to do but do anyway because I know it’s important.
Having regular bowel movements -Bowel movement can be very difficult for people with Spina Bifida because they do not work properly and can take some hours to have a bowel movement that is not that great. If you get a little constipated, it’s not a medical emergency, and it happens to everyone, but you don’t want to want to make a regular habit of not going to the bathroom because it can become a medical emergency. I never want to have a bowel movement because it takes a minimum of two hours out of my day, and sometimes it can be very painful, but I still do it because sometimes you have to do things you don’t want to do. I have known people with Spina Bifida who do not prioritize going to the bathroom and squeeze it in their day if they have time, but going to the bathroom is not something you should squeeze into your day if it happens to work out and you need to make time for it. You don’t have to enjoy having a bowel movement, but as much as I hate it, I never skip it because it’s necessary and not having a bowel movement can cause you to need an avoidable surgery.
Exercise-Exercise is important for your health because it is hard and sometimes people don’t care about changing their bodies so they don’t do it. There are so many health benefits to regular exercise and it’s not always about the way you look because exercise should be a form of self-care, not self-hatred. As a disabled person, I enjoy my weightlifting workouts and don’t struggle to motivate myself to do them but if you were to ask me to do ten minutes of cardio I’d pass and haven’t been consistent with my walking workouts until recently and I started to force myself to do them. I enjoy a lot of the exercises I do but you can enjoy exercise and still have days where you don’t want to exercise and that is part of being human. It is okay to occasionally skip a workout and sometimes your body needs a rest day but the one thing you will never see me do is go months and months and not do any kind of movement because sometimes you have to exercise even if you don’t want to. Some days I am very motivated to do my workout other days I am not but unless I have a valid excuse for not exercising such as increased pain, I will not skip my workout and it’s non-negotiable for me.
Go to the doctor and have regular tests done– Most of my doctors are nice people and I don’t dread going to the doctor because I am afraid, I am going to be gaslit and dislike my provider. I don’t like going to the doctor because there are a lot of things I would rather be doing than spending the day sitting in the waiting room at my doctor’s office, but it is important for your health. Most people do not like going to the doctor and non-disabled people often can choose to not go until they become ill, but I don’t have that choice because I require more specialist visits. I never want to go to the doctor or have any kind of test done because some tests can be painful due to pain but I still do them. I hate having any kind of abdominal examination and they can be painful because of endometriosis but I still sometimes have them because sometimes you can have a medical problem that doesn’t cause you pain.
Take my medication- As a disabled person, I take a few medications and don’t mind taking pills because it takes a few seconds, and I have been taking meds my whole life. I wish I didn’t have to take medication because sometimes it can be difficult to remember and often causes a lot of fatigue I wouldn’t have if I wasn’t taking medication. I still try to remember to take my medication as often as prescribed even if it causes a little fatigue because I know I will feel better when I take my medication, and it keeps me out of the hospital and it’s not a choice for me. I take my medication even though sometimes it causes me to experience horrible side effects, and I wish I could skip it but I don’t because I know it keeps me healthy. There is no shame in needing medication and it should be a priority if you need it because you can’t expect to feel better if you aren’t giving your body what it needs.
Go to the dentist– I don’t know a single person who enjoys going to the dentist, but it is so important that we get the plaque removed from your teeth because it is not just about having pearly white teeth and the plaque on your teeth can cause heart issues if you let it build up. I hate going to the dentist but still do because your dentist can check for things like mouth cancer and see potential problems that might not give you pain.
If you want to feel your best, it is so important that you do whatever it takes to improve your health even if you don’t want to. Some people wait to be motivated before they start to exercise but I don’t like to wait until I feel motivated because sometimes, I am never motivated. There are some things in life that we have to do such as eat healthy that we don’t always want to do but know we should because it’s good for our health. It is okay if you don’t enjoy eating vegetables but even though you don’t like something that doesn’t mean you should avoid doing it because there are a lot of things I do on a regular basis that I don’t want to. Do what it takes to be as healthy as you can be because that is all you can do and the only way you will be able to prevent pain is by practicing healthy habits.
