If you want to make money online, there are lots of ways you can do that, and I don’t think one way is better than the other, because if you are willing to put in the work, your hobby has the potential to make money. Blogging and YouTube are two of the most popular ways people make money online, and both of these things can make you a full-time income, but which is better? Some people say blogging is dead and that no one reads blogs anymore, but I disagree because there are a lot of blogs that get thousands of views a day, and anyone who says blogging is dead doesn’t know what they are talking about. People sometimes will prefer to watch a video over reading a blog post, but that doesn’t mean everyone should ditch blogging and start a YouTube channel, because some people can’t present themselves well on camera and wouldn’t thrive at being a YouTuber. Should you start a blog or a YouTube channel? In this post, I am going to talk about things you should ask yourself if you aren’t sure whether you should have a blog or a YouTube channel.
Are you an introvert or extrovert?- Some bloggers have both YouTube and a blog because having video content can help increase their views, but it is not required. If you freeze when a camera goes on, it might not be the best idea to start a YouTube channel because, in order to grow your platform, you need to keep people hooked and present yourself well. Your first video will be terrifying and not your best because no one is an expert on day one, and it takes time to get comfortable and become an expert in your field. Are you an introvert or an extrovert? Most bloggers are more introverted, which is why we are writers, and many YouTubers are more extroverted and prefer to talk to people. I have created video content on my social media, but I am a very introverted person, which is why I don’t have a YouTube channel because I don’t present myself as well on camera, and I know I wouldn’t thrive at that. It is important to figure out what kind of person because some personalities may not thrive at certain hobbies, and that is okay. You shouldn’t force yourself to do a hobby you know you aren’t good at, because even though your friend thrives at it, that doesn’t mean you will.
How much do you have to spend?- Blogging and YouTube can cost money, but blogging is a cheaper hobby because you can blog without spending any money. When you have a YouTube channel, it is a little more expensive because you may have to buy a decent camera to film your content and some video editing software that you wouldn’t need if you had a blog. I pay for my blog because I am trying to make money, but the only thing I really need to pay for is hosting, which is a lot cheaper than an expensive camera and editing software. I live off government assistance and don’t make a lot of money, which is why I chose blogging, because you can blog for free, and I can’t afford to do an expensive hobby. I would have more limitations if I couldn’t pay for my blog, but I could blog if hosting got too expensive and I couldn’t afford to do it. How much money do you realistically have to spend on your hobby? If you want to start a YouTube channel and have a well-paying job and can afford to get a decent camera, then do that, but if you are on a slightly lower income, you might want to consider blogging.
How much time do you have?- Building a blog and a YouTube channel both can take a lot of time, but blogging does take a little less time because editing a video takes more time than editing a blog post. I can edit a blog post in an hour or less, but if you had to edit a video, it may take you all day. How much time do you have to spend on your hobby? If you are a very busy person and don’t have a lot of extra time to spend on your hobby, you might want to consider starting a blog, but if you have more time and enjoy making video content, you could start a YouTube channel. It is important to be realistic with how much time you have because you don’t want to be rushing content or neglecting your platforms because you don’t have time.
Blogging and YouTube can make you a lot of money, but everyone is different, and whether you should start a blog or YouTube channel is very individualized, and it depends on what type of person you are. Some people prefer to watch a video over reading a blog post, but I don’t think one is better than the other, and it all comes down to how you present information. If your readers are bored and you aren’t keeping people hooked and wanting more, it doesn’t matter what you have; people aren’t going to want to subscribe to channels that put them to sleep. Pick something you know you can thrive at, and don’t start a YouTube channel because everyone else is doing it. You want to pick something that you enjoy because you will be able to present yourself better than if you were forcing yourself to do something you don’t like. Do you have a blog or YouTube channel?
