How To Entertain Yourself Without Social Media

Social media makes it easy to entertain ourselves but there are times when social platforms are making updates, or the Internet is down because we lost power, and you don’t have access to social media. People are addicted to their phones these days and don’t know what to do with themselves when they don’t have access to the Internet because we have become too dependent on social media to keep us entertained. Some parents are giving kids cell phones at a very young age instead of teaching them creative play. When I was growing up social media was not a thing, and I was forced to go outside and play, which I think many kids don’t know how to do these days because it’s easier to turn the tv set on and have your kids entertained for hours. As a disabled blogger, I spend more time on the Internet than the average person because I am a blogger and have to update my social media daily, but I try not to have limits for myself because social media can be toxic and there is so much you can do outside of the Internet. How do you entertain yourself without using social media? In this post, I am going to talk about a few things you can do to entertain yourself without using social media.

Write a blog post or journal– Some bloggers use social media to promote their blogs because you can get a lot of traffic from social platforms but it’s not a requirement and you can’t run a successful blog without ever setting up an Instagram account and that is usually only recommended for people who want to make money and reach a larger audience. Writing can be very therapeutic, and it does not require you to be on social media or the Internet at all because you can write anywhere. If you want to share a post, you need the Internet, but you don’t need an Internet connection to write one because you can write in private and don’t have to share your thoughts with strangers. Writing is a great way to keep yourself entertained and engage your mind because writing just one article can take some people all day, depending on how much experience you have. I can write several blog posts in a day because I have written hundreds of posts over the years of being a blogger and can write pretty fast, but even if you have a lot of experience, it still can take a few hours to write one post, and is a great way to kill time.

Color some pictures- If you are bored, coloring is a great option because it’s not just for kids, and there are a lot of adult coloring books, so everyone can do it. I have never been a big fan of coloring and don’t color every single day, but I do always have coloring books on hand because you never know when the Internet is going to go down and when you will be desperate to do literally anything. Many disabled and chronically ill people enjoy coloring because it’s one of the very few activities that your disability does not prevent you from doing well, and I mostly don’t like it because I am a perfectionist, and sometimes it gives me neck pain. Coloring is not my favorite activity, but if I didn’t have access to the Internet and it was either color or be bored, I would choose to color every single time. I am not artistically creative, but you don’t have to draw pictures because there are so many adult coloring books, and I am sure you can find something that interests you.

Do some exercise– When I exercise, I use YouTube and need access to the Internet to be able to watch my videos, but if I didn’t have access to the Internet, I could still exercise, and I just wouldn’t be able to do my preferred exercise. When you are bored, engaging in a little movement is a great activity because it can improve your physical health and takes most people at least an hour or more to do. There are a lot of different ways to exercise, and there is no exercise program that is better than the other because the best exercise is the one you will do consistently. Exercise is a great way to kill some time and has a lot of health benefits, so everyone who is able should be doing it.

Do a puzzle- Puzzles have never been something that has entertained me for that long because I usually end up getting frustrated or bored but there are tons of different types of puzzles that can keep you occupied for a while. If you don’t enjoy jigsaw puzzles, then don’t do them, and maybe try a crossword puzzle or a word search. I would much rather do a word search than a jigsaw puzzle and although I don’t do them daily, I always keep them on hand in case I don’t have access to the Internet. Puzzles are great way to challenge your mind, and you don’t need social media to do a puzzle.

Learn a new skill- You can learn a lot of skills online because there are so many YouTube tutorials and that is how I learned how to start a blog. Learn a new skill and take a sewing class or teach yourself how to crochet because these can be good skills to have. It can take years to learn a new skill and be proficient in it, and you might as well teach yourself something that might actually be useful because you aren’t going to learn anything new by watching people on TikTok make a fool of themselves all day long for views. It can feel so rewarding when you take the time to teach yourself a new language that takes time and effort to be proficient at.

Call a friend- When was the last time you called your friends? I have to admit that sometimes I am not the best at remembering to call my friends to catch up or anyone and I want to get better at that because I want to know what people are up to. Call your friends and see what they are up to because you never know how long a chat with a long-time friend is going to be or if they just need to talk to you.

Listen to some music– I love listening to music and am perfectly content with putting on my favorite playlist and sitting and doing literally nothing. Put on your favorite song and dance to it because you don’t need to be a professional dancer to dance to your favorite songs. Dancing is fun, burns calories, and allows us to disconnect from the Internet for a few hours. If you are a wheelchair user and can’t stand, you still may be able to dance, and sometimes you have to do it in a slightly different way.

Social media was not a thing when I was growing up, and I am grateful it wasn’t available until I was older because it forced me to engage in play, and it taught me different ways to entertain myself without relying on the Internet. Social media is a great way to keep your kids entertained if you are at the doctor’s office but it’s also important that we teach our children how to entertain themselves without giving them a cell phone because social media is fake, and you will never develop your critical thinking skills by watching cute cat videos all day long. Social media is a great place for disabled people to connect with others who truly understand the challenges of a disability because a lot of the time we can’t leave our house and by no means am I saying that you should never use social media, but it can never hurt to occasionally unplug from it and go out and see the world. What activities do you enjoy that don’t require you to get on social media? If you liked this post, please leave a comment below and share it with your friends.
