When it comes to health, I think everyone wants to feel good and be healthy because no one wants to have to go to the doctor for an avoidable illness. I don’t know a single person who doesn’t want to be healthy, but it can be expensive to eat a healthier diet because vegetables are more expensive than buying a couple of bags of chips. You can improve your health by eating more organic foods, but not everyone is in a place financially where they can afford to buy organic of everything because the cost of food is expensive. Disabled people often live in poverty and can’t afford to buy the most expensive healthy food on the market, and the good news is you don’t have to because you can improve your health without spending a bunch of extra money that you probably don’t have. How can you improve your health when you don’t have a lot of money? In this post, I am going to share a few easy ways that you can improve your health that will not cost a bunch of extra money.
Do a little exercise- I have said many times before that exercise is so important for your health because people who exercise regularly have a slightly lower risk for diseases than someone who never exercise. Some people may choose to join a gym, which is a great option if you are able to afford that, but gym memberships are a luxury, and not everyone has a bunch of money to put into things that they don’t need. There are a lot of inexpensive ways to exercise, and you don’t have to join a gym to get your workout in because you can’t get just as good of a workout at home. As a disabled person, I have never even considered joining a gym because I think it would be a waste of money for me personally since I can’t use most of the equipment and the things I can I am able to have at home. I love working out at home because I am less likely to make excuses for skipping a workout when I don’t have to drive anywhere. There are a lot of ways you can exercise at home that will cost you little to no money: go for a walk or run, get on the treadmill, or do a free workout video. Exercise is one of the easiest ways to improve your health because the better your cardiovascular health is, the less likely you will be to have a heart attack.
Quit smoking– I have never been a smoker because it’s so bad for your lungs, and it doesn’t matter whether you are vaping or smoking; they are both bad for you, and you should do neither of them. Smoking increases your risk for lung cancer, and if there is one thing that you can do that will improve your health, it’s to stop smoking because nothing good will come of it. I know it is hard to quit any kind of bad habit, and there are a lot of ways you can quit smoking and I encourage you to look into them because the sooner you stop, the better your health will be. You don’t want to wait until you have gotten cancer before you quit smoking because by that point, it’s too late, and the damage is done.
Improve your diet– You don’t have to eat organic of everything to improve your health because even though something says it’s organic, that doesn’t mean it’s healthy. Disabled people sometimes do not have a lot of access to healthy food because it’s more expensive to eat healthy than it is to not eat healthy. Take a look at the foods you are eating and ask yourself if there are any healthy swaps you can make that will improve your health. If you have some carrots sitting in your house but usually eat chips for a snack, maybe try eating the vegetables because the healthier your food choices are, the better you will feel. Healthy eating should not be an all or nothing approach, and sometimes, it’s not about what you cut out but it’s what can you add in. You can improve your health drastically by eating healthier because the more anti-inflammatory foods you can eat, the better you will feel. Food is medicine and sometimes it’s our poor food choices that make us sick, and improving that can help you feel better. A healthier diet will probably not cure a chronic illness or disability, but it may improve symptoms.
Remove yourself from a toxic relationship- When I was in high school, I had a couple of people that I was good friends with for a long time, that all of a sudden didn’t work anymore because she was an entirely different person and not the friend I thought I had. I tried to make these friendships work, but sometimes you can’t change people and have to accept the reality that it’s not always going to work out, and that is okay. When you have to end a friendship that has lasted almost ten years, sometimes it can make you feel guilty, and you may struggle to let go of that relationship. Toxic relationships are stressful and not worth it, and one of the best things you can do for your health is to remove yourself from that situation. I felt like a complete failure when I had to end a long-time friendship, but at the same time, I felt a huge weight off my shoulders because I was no longer fighting with this person every single day. Removing yourself from a toxic relationship and not rebuilding it is not selfish but is self-care. A highly stressful friendship is not good for health and can cause health issues, and sometimes removing yourself from it is the best thing you can do. Don’t force yourself to be friends with toxic people so you can have a larger friend circle because it’s not worth it, and it’s better to have a smaller group of friends who support you.
Do some stretches– Some disabled people are not able to exercise because they have medical conditions that worsen with physical activity. If you can’t exercise, that is okay because you shouldn’t force yourself to move if it’s going to cause a flare. If you can, do some light stretches because it helps relieve tension, which will improve pain and lessen the likelihood of injury. Stretching is not just for people who exercise, and anyone who sits for extended periods of time should be stretching daily. I use my arms for everything I do because I walk with crutches, and if I didn’t stretch every day, I would get so tight, and it would be more difficult to move. Don’t skip stretching because a little bit of light stretching can do so much for your health.
Good health is important because cancer can happen to anyone, and we want to do our best to lessen the likelihood of that happening because no one wants to be sick. You can be doing everything right and still get cancer because there are some things in life you cannot control, but you do have control over the food you eat and how much you exercise. Yearly physicals can also help improve your health because your doctor can check for health problems that may not be giving you symptoms. Don’t wait until you’re sixty to start developing healthy habits because the habits you build in your thirties can affect you when you are older. It will be a lot harder to build healthy habits when you are older if you spend your entire life not caring about what you put in your body. What are easy things you do to improve your health?
