Five Things In Life You Can Control

People sometimes stress about things that are not within their control, that is not your fault, and you shouldn’t be stressing, but you are human and sometimes stress about things you couldn’t have changed. There are a lot of things in life that you may have some control over, but are not within your complete control, because bad things happen to good people. You may not always be able to control what illnesses you catch or the outcome of a situation, because you can be doing everything right and still get sick, but there are a lot of things in life that are within your complete control. Life is hard and frustrating with a disability, and it is to put all our energy and stress into things we can’t control and forget about what we can. I can’t control my disability or completely prevent health challenges from happening, and the only thing I can do is my best to manage them. We should always try to not stress about things we cannot control, but when everything is going wrong, sometimes it happens, and in those times, we just need to take a step back and breathe. In a previous post, I talked about five things in life that you cannot control so today I am going to talk about five things you can.

What you eat and how much you exercise- Healthy food is not always accessible to disabled people because sometimes you don’t make enough money to buy the most organic ingredients, and that is always within your complete control to change. If you are trying to make healthier choices and have the choice between broccoli or pasta, and you choose the pasta, that is within your complete control. You can’t control how different foods are going to affect your body because sometimes people have sensitivities, but you can control what you put in your body. Some disabled people are not able to exercise because of their disability, and that is not within your control, but if you are able and choose not to, it’s no one’s fault but your own. You can’t control how your exercise routine and food choices will affect your body, but you can control how often you exercise and the foods you eat.

Who your friends are- Everyone has family issues, and I have never met anyone who doesn’t have family drama, because you can’t control what family you are born into. It is not always easy to completely shut off family members because you see them at every family function, but who you are friends with is within your complete control. You can completely walk away from a friend that you don’t align with anymore, because you aren’t attached to your friends. Who your friends are is your choice because you don’t have to be friends with people who don’t make you feel good about yourself. We don’t get to choose our family, but we do get to choose our friends, and it is okay to walk away from a friendship that is no longer serving you. Some people may struggle to walk away from a toxic friendship, but who you hang around is within your control.

How often you go to the bathroom– When you have Spina Bifida, going to the bathroom is often more difficult because your bladder and bowel muscles do not work properly, and that is not something you can control. I struggle with chronic constipation because of my disability, and that is not something that is within my complete control to prevent. I can’t control how often I get constipated or if my bowel regimen will work, but I can control how often I choose to go to the bathroom. I may not have complete control over my bladder or bowel function, but I can control the frequency of my bathroom trips to help keep these things as healthy as they can be.

If you listen to your doctor- As a disabled person with a lot of health challenges, I do, try to listen to my doctor’s advice as much as I can, but depending on what my doctor is telling me to do, sometimes I ignore it. Doctors can give patients all kinds of good advice, but at the end of the day, they can’t force us to take the medication that was prescribed, and are not in complete control of what patients do after we leave that appointment. You should always listen to your doctor unless you feel like you are being given bad advice, because you will never get better if you don’t at least entertain what your doctor is telling you, but whether you listen to your doctor or not is your choice. Doctors sometimes get mad when patients don’t listen to them because they want you to get better, but only you have control over what advice you take from your doctor.

How often you take your meds- When I was a child, I hated taking medication and would put my meds in a napkin and throw them in the trash when I thought my mom wasn’t looking, but now, as an adult I want to take my meds because I feel better when I do. You can’t control how your medication affects you or if it’s even going to work, and the only thing we can do is hope it does, but you do have control over how often you take your meds. The frequency you take your medication is up to you, and you can choose to take them as prescribed or not take them at all because it doesn’t matter how many prescriptions you have; your doctor cannot force you to take your meds.

Life is stressful sometimes, and it is easy to stress about things we cannot control because everyone wants things to run smoothly and work out all the time, but that is not how life is. Living with a disability is stressful because you can be doing great, and all of a sudden have an expected health challenge that cannot be reversed. I try not to stress about things that are not in my control because there are a lot of things about living with a disability that are frustrating, and I don’t have the energy to stress about things I couldn’t have done better. It is silly to stress about things you cannot control because it doesn’t matter how much you stress about a situation; it doesn’t change the outcome.
