Positives Of Being On Bed Rest

When you are disabled, sometimes you have periods of your life when you are stuck in bed because you are recovering from surgery or are ill. People in pain often spend more time in bed than people without pain because sometimes the pain is too much to be able to do anything. Most days, my pain does not leave me bed-bound, but I have had plenty of surgeries where I was stuck in bed for weeks, unable to do anything that required me to move. Bed rest is sometimes necessary, but it can get boring because watching TV marathons all day, every day is not what it’s cracked up to be. When you get bored, sometimes you get depressed because you want to get up to do things, but your body won’t let you. There are more negatives to being stuck in bed than positives, but I try not to focus on only the negatives because it can make you more depressed. What are the positives of being on bed rest? In this post, I am going to share a few positives that can come from being stuck in bed.

You never miss your favorite TV shows- Most people who are stuck in bed because of an illness or surgery watch a lot of TV because there is not a whole lot you can do that won’t increase your pain and sometimes that is your only option for staying entertained. If I were recovering from a surgery, I usually will watch a lot of TV for the first couple of weeks until I get bored and want to do some other activity. People want to watch TV all day long because they are lazy but I promise you it’s not what it’s cracked up to be, and after a while, it won’t matter what’s on, you will want to do anything but that. If watching TV is the only thing you can do, sometimes it can get depressing, but one of the positives is that you never miss your favorite TV show. Most things these days are on streaming services and you can watch them anytime but people still have cable and sometimes you get busy and miss your favorite show. You won’t miss your favorite TV shows if that is all you are doing all day long.

You get to have all your meals in bed- If I am not recovering from a surgery, and am well, I have to walk to my kitchen to eat a meal because I am very capable of doing that. I don’t mind taking a break and walking to my kitchen to eat dinner because food can track bugs, and I don’t like to keep food in my room for that reason. If I am recovering from surgery, sometimes I have to eat in bed because I don’t have enough strength to walk to my kitchen without injuring myself. It is kind of nice to have room service because it allows me to be able to continue doing the task at hand without stopping. After a while, it does get old and you crave movement but I can’t complain about breakfast in bed because who doesn’t want that?

People don’t judge you for watching TV all day- If you are watching TV all long and don’t need to be in bed, sometimes people will see that as lazy and will tell you to get up and do something. You don’t get judged by others for watching TV if you are recovering from surgery, and that is all you can do because people expect you to do that. If you are well and aren’t doing anything productive, people tend to shame you for sitting in bed all day, but you don’t have to worry when you aren’t well, because doing nothing is acceptable. I personally don’t judge people for doing nothing because you never know if someone is dealing with pain you cannot see and don’t have the energy to function normally, but most people don’t understand that and will judge you if you don’t look sick.

It gives you a chance to catch up on reading– When you are not stuck in bed, sometimes we get busy and have a bunch of books we have been wanting to read but haven’t had the time to read them. If you are stuck in bed, it’s the perfect time to dust off those books and catch up on reading because reading a book doesn’t require a lot of physical energy, and depending on the type of pain you are experiencing, most times it won’t cause more. I wouldn’t read a book if I were in bed because I had a migraine, but it’s the perfect activity if you are recovering from surgery and are bored because your doctor told you to rest.

It allows you to get blogging done- If you are in a lot of pain and cannot look at a computer screen without more pain, I wouldn’t recommend writing a blog post because it will compromise the quality of your post, and that should always be a priority. Blogging can be a great activity if you are stuck in bed because you had a mild foot injury and your doctor told you to rest. If I am recovering from surgery, I usually won’t blog for about a week or two when pain is at its worst, but once it starts to lessen, I start blogging again because blogging is one of those things you can do in bed. It can take a while to write a blog, and it is a great thing to do if you are in bed and bored because you don’t have distractions and allows you to really focus. I prefer to write blog posts on my computer because I can do it faster, but I can write blog posts from a cellphone or my iPad if I have to, and will if I am bored, because you can blog from anywhere.

When you are stuck in bed, it is frustrating because it can get boring, and sometimes you get lonely. I am fortunate that I am not completely bed-bound very often, like some disabled people are, but I do know what it’s like to be stuck in bed because I have had enough surgeries to know what that is like. There is nothing worse than being bored and stuck in bed, but one of the positives is that it allows you to focus on self-care. People sometimes neglect self-care because they get busy, but when you are stuck in bed, you are forced to take a step back to breathe, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Bed rest is frustrating, but I try not to only focus on the negatives because it makes recoveries feel ten times longer. It is okay to be frustrated with the fact you are not able to get out of bed, and you don’t have to be happy about it, but it can help you get through when you do things that lift your spirits. What positives do you think come from being stuck in bed? If you liked this post, please leave a comment below and share it with your friends.
